When I was in TUS in December, I saw this L1011 flying hospital parked on the cargo ramp...

Is it still in service? Its web site was out of date, and the last photo to show it anywhere besides TUS was taken in July 2001.

Quite an interesting bird...

Started off as a PSA plane with special configuration, had a ramp (retractable steps) going from the ground floor up to the cabin area. Many photos on this site of the orig plane. Was sponsored by "Operation Blessing" a TV church, as a flying hospital. The cost of running this beast over to the jungles and bannana republics broke the bank. Most country's demanded landing fees and bribes so the medical missionaries could help the people. Now called the Flying Hospital and getting grants and donations. With the Muslims now showing their true colors it sits until peace comes, or the org disbands. Go to wwwtheflyinghospital.org

I believe that Delta donated the last L-1011 to retire, N728DA to the Flying Hospital organization to use as a source of spares. They made a big deal out of it at the retirement ceremony.

Interesting. I would also think XXXXX Airline would make a big deal about donating a plane to a non profit organisation.

It has not flown since November 2001. And not once did it ever fly a relief mission. I've seen it literally every day, parked pretty much in the same spot, for the last 8 years.

BTW, it's not the cargo ramp.

Damn, this website is getting worse daily.
