Detroit To Chicago.

I need to take a day trip from Detroit to Chicago. Preferably to Midway but not mandatory. My choices seem to be: United 737 to ORD and RJ on the return. WN 737 there and back. NW DC9 there and back. Or I could be adventurous and take ATA Saab 340 from Flint.

Having never been on a turboprop would it be worth the extra hassle to take a 20 minute longer commute to flint or should I stick with the tried and true?

Personally, I avoid regional jets & turbo props if I can... the flight's short enough (about 30-40 minutes in the air) that you can pick the cheapest carrier/carrier with the best schedule -- all airlines will give you a beverage & peanuts/pretzles. If you want to be adventurous & have the time, connect via ATL on DL (ticket's the same price but taxes will add $10-$15 more RT).

And it depends on where in the Metro area you're headed to... FNT's more convienent for N. Oakland County...

Another option is Amtrak's Rail Sale. The available trains allow one to take a day trip, and for just $12 each eay (inclusive - you can get off at any station between Chicago and Pontiac, which includes every Detroit-area station) via this month.

I've never flown through DTW, however if you are leaving at a busy time of day it may be worth the 20 extra minutes to get to Flint just to save time at the airport.

I would just do whatever is cheapest, I recently Flew ORD-DTW and back and Was on 733's, the flight is alot shorter than I thought it would be. I got my tickets for 108. Not bad. Do whatever is cheapest and most convienient for you, or whatever fits into your plans the best, terminal 1 at ohare is the best though!!!

I'd choose depending on where you need to be in Chicago. Depending on the time of day and where you have to go, the commute to either MDW or ORD can be a nightmare. That is dependent on if you are renting a car or taking the subway. Fly to the airport thats the closest to your meeting or whatever.

That said, if you're going to MDW, you've got:
NW & WN on DTW-MDW and C8 ATA Connection (Chicago Express) on FNT-MDW.

You aren't going to save time at the airport at FNT versus DTW, you might save on parking at FNT, but thats about it.

Going to ORD you can take AA, UA, or NW.

If you can book a seat out of FNT. FNT ran about a 95% load factor last month (over 5600 pax), obviously much better then any other station in the system. I'd suggest going with whatever is cheapest and fits your schedule...there are obviously a ton of flights to choose from.

I guess it's your decision. I'd stick to DTW myself but I've been on the turboprops. The only place I like to sit in a turboprop is in the cockpit.

When I was younger, I flew Chicago to Detroit tons of times. I always flew WN or UA, and was always happier with WN. MDW is much easier then ORD in my eyes. My dad flies MDW to Flint on that ATA flight almost once a month and swears by it. Definately, take the cheapest, and I agree that if DTW is too busy, Flint is a nice (but not very beautiful  Wink/being sarcastic ) avoidance of the international airport. But personally, I'd say WN. That's just me. Also, if you get held up at a meeting or something, they are much more relaxed on changing flights. My family lives through southwest simply because my father always gets held up late or let out early from meetings and can easily catch an earlier or later flight, which is hard without big hits on UA, AA, etc.

Might as well experience the turboprop while you can. They're becoming increasing more rare, and the fact that you've made it this long without riding on one, go for it. You can check out FNT and fly into MDW.

I fly MHT-MDW-DTW and then back again about 8 to 10 times a year. I have tried several different airlines, but WN seems to be the best. I know its nothing "extravagant" and its not on a wide body, but its definitely the easiest, and probably close to the cheapest. IMHO, I would say WN. Once you get into the smith terminal at DTW (I think its smith, I can never remember) the walk isn't that bad, and MDW is usually good about "on time" arr. And dep.
-that's another thing, WN is almost always ontime!!

Fly Northwest, because that old terminal is a total pain in the behind...I'm glad that Northwest built that new one, it's so easy to get around inside...

And besides, DC-9 flights, although cramped, aren't that bad on an hour hop. I have done Detroit to Chicago before, on the way out, a DC-9, and on the way back, I think it was an A319. A319 was so nice...very very smooth.

I don't know what they feed ATA folks at MDW, but C8 is usually the least expensive option when customers "counter shop" at our airport. Granted, advance purchase fares are usually close regardless of airline, but remember, the major reason why this is so is due to our presence as the only scheduled LCC in the market. We have T9, US, NW, CO and AA in addition to TZ -- we are hardly the "ONLY option." Why you'd disparage us is beyond me, however it seems to be a favorite past time of TZ employees; must be because our aircraft are so darn "cute"  Wink/being sarcastic.

How far is Detroit from Chicago? I'd understand if you were trying to select the best way to say, Fiji, but Chicago? Hell you can drive that! That is a 40 min flight or 4-5 hr car ride... Take the cheapest option you can, and I'm sure there is some competition on that route.

Wow, a mainline employee telling passengers not to fly with their commuter. Must still be sore about the business class option.

reguardless of what was said, ATA Connection is almost always the cheapest option to Chicago. We are $165 cheaper out of Grand Rapids than United and American. I would say go for it an fly out of FNT. I think you will enjoy it. As Rya said FNT flew a 95% load factor last month. They have exploded out of there. Next best station was IND, but I don't count them as most of them are non-revs coming from headquarters, followed by my station GRR!! Shameless plug sorry. I think if you fly ATA Connection out of FNT you will have a good flight. Send me a PM if you can, i'll have some additional info.

ATA is ok, and Flint is a nice airport, but sometimes the A10A(Commuter) gate at Midway can be a real pain to fly out of, with absolutely no views of the field and too many people waiting for flights. With Southwest your chances that you get a new gate with a decent view are much better.

If you want to experience a prop, might I suggest sitting in a window seat behind the wing of a DH8, where you can feel the vibration and watch the wheels impact the runway.

TZ utilized WN’s DTW/MDW fares (sometimes with minor increases) on its FNT/MDW flights until recently, when it created its own fares for the market…

Prop aircraft will be around for many years. With what TZ's fares ex-FNT, you could fly DTW-CHI twice... and what you save on parking you'll spend on gas during the extra commute!

I wasn't talking about DTW-MDW. I was talking about FNT-MDW. Everybody knows Southwest charges apples for their fares, suprisengly because you won't even get that on a Southwest flight (to anywhere).

Take the turboprop. I think you will enjoy it. Like I said drop me an email or a PM, Us C8 guys can get you a cheap roundtrip fare.
