It is nearly 4 years since the Southwest 737 skidded through the perimeter fence at Burbank - and ended up in a petrol station forecourt. I am English but I remember waking up that morning and GMTV news had an anchorwoman who normally covers the celeb goings on in LA, live from the scene it was really gripping to see how close it had come to a catastrophe.
It was March 05 2000, anyone remember this or have relatives who may have stories about it and maybe what became of the aircraft itself.

The gas station is no longer there as well.

I still have the newspaper cut out of that one, lots of pics including a very large one that takes up about a third of a page. It was several pages long.
Quite big in the media's eyes overhere even though the accident was relitivly minor (Could have been worse if it went that extra 40 feet).
I think the paper was the Manchester Evening News, not sure.

"CVR and FDR data indicate that the airplane touched down at 1810:58 with flaps extended to 30° at about 182 knots" from the above linked NTSB report.
I remember that after the NTSB report on this accident first came out, I flew the approach at the same speeds, altitudes, and flap settings on my PC flight simulator at home. There was no way I could get the airplane stopped on the runway. Why the flight crew didn't abort the approach is a complete mystery, a total screwup.

i opened the burbank station on 4/16/90 with southwest airlines, and at the time was southwest's airlines youngest employee, herb took me to lunch. i remember working flights at gate 9, and planes from every airline would land and pull right up to the fence. this incident, was compounded by weather delays all day, and the a/c was written off. it sat on the opposite side of the field in burbank for quite some time and was parted out. since that day, burbank airport and swa have been in quite a quarrel. friends that still work there say the airline wants improvements, mainly a new terminal, but the nimbys in burbank on the council don't want a new airport. you know the saying, build it and they will come, the burbank nimbys won't build it. the funny thing is, the new terminal would still have the same number of gates as the old terminal, 14, just more updated facilities. the new terminal would have two terminals, 7 gates each, on the old lockheed building facility, and would be built in a big U shape.

Burbank is an exciting airport to land at. I go there about once a year on HP 737 and A319's out of PHX. The pilots break hard with full reverse. Then when they turn, the fence is just outside your window. Some might find it scary, but it still beats driving to LAX.

Looking at the pics everyone got out ok right ?? and I feel that a PC simulation will never re-enact life totally so bagging the crew from flight sim is'nt right, only the people involved will know the situation and affecting factors.

I haven't seen the pictures before, I'm surprised no one mentioned they painted over all the WN logos. Not that any other airline probably wouldn't, but it reminds me of when Tower Air overran the runway at JFK, I think there was someone with a bucket of paint and a paintbrush headed to the plane before the crash crews.

The NTSB report on the accident told me everything I needed to know:
Excerpt:
"PROBABLE CAUSE
The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the flight crew's excessive airspeed and flightpath angle during the approach and landing and its failure to abort the approach when stabilized approach criteria were not met. Contributing to the accident was the controller's positioning of the airplane in such a manner as to leave no safe options for the flight crew other than a go-around maneuver."

BUR is about the closest thing to an aircraft carrier that I've ever seen without having been on one. You land on 8, rollout to the end, turn right, and poof!--you're at the gate. The proximity of the gates to the runway centerline really catches your attention.
New terminals, of course, won't make the runways longer, nor make the terrain/obstacles around the airport disappear (two items that would permit longer flights out of BUR, and improve the landing minimums getting into BUR), but new terminals would make things nicer for the passengers. Don't know that we'll ever see them...

There is absolutely no room there for runway expansion. Talk about a hemmed-in airport. 17 years ago, I was on the FAR Part 150 Noise Compatability Committee (LA County Aviation rep) that originally was studying for a new terminal. My first experience with the NIMBY's. Haven't seen anything like that group of people.
For reference sake, the FAA's Advisory Circular on airport design states that no non-frangible (easily breakable) building can be located within something like 700' of a runway centerline. BUR's terminal has always been around 350' from the runway centerlines. I believe the FAA has fairly recently threatened BUR with fines and grant holdups if they didn't get everything corrected. I also believe that they recently backed off those threats.
