I was wondering what is the longest runway in the world, excluding area 51's!

I will go out on a limb and say Edwards Air Force base in California...landing spot for the Space Shuttle. Could be wrong though.

I'm guessing Andrews AFB.

The answer, so far as commercial usage goes, is Ulyanovsk-Vostochny International Airport (Russia) at 16,404ft

The longest runway in the world was just opened at DEN about 10months ago. I will try to find out how long it is. I also believe it is the widest runway in the world too. This alowes planes to land in the snow and with heavy wind.

Question, do some of you people actually read the above posts, or just scroll down and post the first tripe that comes to mind....?

This has been bought up a few time. Technically is Edwards AFB. Its roughly 7 miles long. Andrews and Kennedy are not close to that. The longest in the USA commercially is DIA, the new runway is 16,000ft. Its also the longest for a major airport from what I am aware of. Ulyanovsk is damn long though and last I heard was the longest in Europe/Asia/Middle East.

I knew and confirmed that in Florida we have one of the longest runways in the world, at the Kennedy Space Centre. But I found that according to Encyclopedia.com (http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/E/EdwardsA1.asp) Edwards AFB has the longest runway, that we know of at least.

Ok if what you write is true ConcordeKid than I am wrong and DEN must be 404 Feet shorter than Russia. Now the one at DEN is 16,000 feet long and 200 feet wide. The runway is currently used regularly for the second largest jet in the world to deliver cargo. The runway will also allow a fully loaded A380 to takeoff at Denver's altitude.

I don't know for certain, but I would not be surprised if the Russian runway mentioned is indeed the longest paved.

I think Edwards AFB is the longest runway, but only the 15,000 feet or so is paved, the rest is dry lake bed. And the lake bed is only usable certain times of year. From what I've heard (from a guy that worked at NASA Dryden FRC) during monsoon season, the lake bed gets some water in it and makes it very slick for several months at a time. Maybe somebody else could elaborate on this.

The longest runway would technically most likely go to Edwards AFB, with Runway 17/35 measuring in at 39,097 x 900. This runway however, is not paved so that is always open to interpretation.

Fairford in the UK is the 2nd longest runway due to it being the only other other runway suitable and ontrack for the space shuttle to land on if it misses Edwards.

That would be 16R/34L at 16,000x200 ft.

Thanks

Fairford in the UK is the 2nd longest runway due to it being the only other other runway suitable and ontrack for the space shuttle to land on if it misses Edwards.

I've never heard of Fairford being an alternate landing site - NASA's site mentions several Transoceanic Alternate (TAL) and secondary alternate sites, including:

  • White Sands, New Mexico USA

  • Elmendorf AFB, Alaska USA

  • Anderson AFB, Guam

  • Yokota Air Base, Japan

  • Ben Guerir Air Base, Morocco

  • Banjul International Airport, Gambia

  • Zaragoza Air Base, Spain

  • Moron Air Base, Spain

  • Can you provide a link that shows Fairford being used as an alternate site?

I know one of BOG's is 12,467. I think it's 13L. 13,100 is the length of La Paz's, in Bolivia. I guess it's due to the lack of oxigen at that altitude, BOG being at 2600m and La Paz even higher.
