Alitalia MD-11's - Where Are They Now?

Alitalia has now grounded their MD-11's, previous postes advise that they have converted their MD-11's into freighters to replace their 747-200F's.
Can some one advise how many MD-11's they will retain and how many they will sell off?

(PS: I am new to this chat room, Alitalia is my favourite Airline adn hoping to meet other Alitalia enthusiasts). Cheers from an Italian - Down Under!

I am not an AZ enthusiast. I've been flying it since the 1970's and find it to be unreliable and the staff rude and inefficient. Every stereotype about AZ in my mind is true.

The MD11's are not flying commercial pax any longer. I was in Rome in January and saw four or five parked near the mx hangars.

Thanks ContinentalEWR, for your information.

When was the last time you flew AZ? I last flew then from Australia and Italy just after the KLM divorce and AZ returned to Australia. Their 747's (now stored) were old, however the staff have really improved they are not rude as they were in the 70's/80's and 90's. Their staff are polite and caring. I always fly Alitalia with in Europe and Domestic in Italy, and I find that their planes are clean, plenty of leg room (largest I have seen in Economy), Great IFE and food is better than some airlines. Cannot wait to see them return to Australia, does anyone know if they will? and when they will commence cargo services on their MD-11's?

I have never travelled with Alitalia. I remember the 747 services into Melbourne, it would be nice to see them flying to Australia again hopefully with their 777.

Ciao, VH-TAE.

MD11 going to be converted are 3, as on Alitalia web site was clearly reported on " till the restyling.

Alitalia cannot afford overcosts on australian routes at the moment, the same as for Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong.
Only a brand new flight MXP-Shangai was scheduled for spring new timetable if SARS allows it.

If you are an Alitalia fan follows topics AZ dedicated, exp. VCE and Matt777 threads....

Not here but if you make a search on Planepictures.net, looking at Rome Leonardo da Vinci there are a couple of pictures showing them. They are grounded on the hangar area.

Great plane, I flew AZ once and it was very good. I was going with all the bad publicity they have but they long haul service was correct (from EZE).

Ciao!

AZ has 3 MD-11's for conversion as others have stated. Latest word is they are going to be adding additional 777's to the fleet and later follow-on with the 7E7.

I cannot wait! They're my favorite airline also.

Welcome to the forums!

Hi,
I thought AZ had sold some of their MD-11's to LH, who would convert them into freighters. Does AZ also operate their own cargo fleet?

Regards,
FCP

I like flying AZ within europe...their planes are clean and service pretty decent, though they did lose my luggage once from rome to paris. the said bag turned up a day later and AZ kept me informed throughout (it was a blessing in disguise as I live on a 6th floor without lift and the suitcase was extremely heavy, the poor delivery person).
I once flew their longhaul from australia to rome, a while back. service then was not that great since the FAs seem to disappear after meal service, though you could get whatever you want by going to the galleys yourself. I flew their md11 from rome to milan to los angeles and loved it.

A few winters ago, Alitalia were using their MD-11s on charter flights to Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada every weekend. Since they stopped using them, the 767 is the largest type they use (Livingston and Volare among others use A330s). Is there any chance they might use their 777s on these services?
