I am flying AA next week from IND to CDG and return the following week. I have been assigned seats on 3 of my flights but not on the redeye to Paris (AA's website is great to choose the seats - with the help of seatguru).
What type of seats are kept for assignment at the departure airport (great seats, end of the aircraft, exit rows?)? What should I expect?

AA.com has an excellent tool for seat assignment and, to answer your question, AA does not keep any seats for assignment at the airport, since people who hold elite status can chose the seats that regular AAdvantage customers see as blocked in AA.com. So AA agents at the airport get whatever is left. I'm scheduled to fly in two weeks to JFK on seat 31A, which is an exit row and I bought my ticket and assigned my own seat through AA.com

You are incorrect! Each of AA's flights have a number of "blocked" seats for the agents use. Usually the bulkhead, exit rows, and a variety of other rows/seats are blocked for agents use. Also, AAdvantage Elite passengers do have access to a few seats that other passengers do not, however, they do not have access to those seats blocked for agents.
GLAMD11, if I understand correctly, you have seats assigned on three of your four flights, correct? May I suggest contacting AA reservations to see if they can assign you a seat on that 4th flight, simply so you have a seat ahead of time. Then, upon check-in, if you'd prefer a different seat, advise the agent of your preference. Again, a number of seats are blocked for agent's use, and they should be able to accommodate your request.

Yes, you got it right KKMolokai. IND-ORD, CDG-ORD and ORD-IND have been booked by phone and then changed on AA's website. For the last one, the plane appears to be full on the website but I was told I will have a seat assigned at the airport.
I just wanted to know if that meant that the worse seats are not allowed or if I still have a chance to get something cool (a window: to take pictures!).
I will see on check-in in IND (3 hours before take off from ORD).
