I've plotted how SkyTeam route map might look like with all the upcoming & rumoured new partners. Besides airline hubs, only major airports are shown - those being near a hub or in an area of dense routes are omitted. Plus I tried to simplify North America as much as possible with just the int'l hubs shown so that it's easier to trace the routes (sorry, Europe is too complicated!). Note that "AZ" represents both Milan and Rome. The white lines are the "missing links" that should ideally be served by any partner airline (for more on this, check out my earlier thread).
Will be joining soon (4)
7. KL KLM Royal Dutch Airline [route map]
8. Nw Northwest [destinations]
9. Co Continental [route map]
10. ME Middle East Airline [destinations]
Application submitted / intention announced (2)
11. SU Aeroflot (Jan 04)
12. CI China Airlines, Taiwan (Nov 03) [route map]
Potential members (partners of Co/KL/NW) (3)
13. CM Copa Airlines (CO) [route map]
14. KQ Kenya Airways (KL/NW) [route map]
15. MH Malaysia Airlines (KL/NW) [route map]
Would be great to have these (2)
16. JJ TAM Brazilian [route map]
17. PZ TAM Mercosur [route map]
Here is a comparison between the projected SkyTeam and Star Alliance on the traffic between :-
- USA/Canada & Mexico/Central America (DL,CO,NW,AM versus Ua,AC,US)
- North America & South America (DL,CO,AM,CM,JJ versus Ua,RG,AC)
- North America & Far East (NW,KE,CO,CI,DL,MH versus Ua,AC,NH,OZ,SQ,TG)
- North America & Europe (DL,NW,CO,AF,KL,AZ,SU,OK versus Ua,LH,AC,US,SK,OS,LO,BD)
- Europe & Africa (AF,KL,AZ,KQ,SU versus LH,SA,OS)
- Europe & Middle East (AF,KL,AZ,ME,SU,OK versus LH,OS)
- Europe & Far East (AF,KL,AZ,KE,MH,CI versus LH,OS,SK,SQ,TG,NH,OZ)
- within North America (DL,CO,NW versus Ua,US,AC)
- within Far East (KE,NW,MH,CI versus SQ,TG,NH,OZ)
- within Europe (AF,KL,AZ,SU,OK versus LH,OS,SK,LO,BD,JK)
In terms of traffic, SkyTeam could easily be world's largest alliance with these new members. But to be a trully global alliance like Star Alliance, SkyTeam needs a partner in the Pacific, perhaps Hawaiian Airlines or Air Tahiti Nui to bridge the gap. The combined network of AM, CM, JJ & PZ is enough to compensate for the absence of a major South American carrier like RG or LA. Of course these are all speculations, speculations, speculations - not in any way intended for starting a war between Star Alliance & SkyTeam supporters

I think you left out as a potential partner Air Europa from Spain, they are trying to grow enough to get membership. Besides they have code shares with AF, AZ (members) and CO, KL. Oh and it would be a natural alliance for them since IB is in One World and JK is in Star.
nice and spacious airports in need of new airlines and flights... GUA or FRS anyone?... anyone at all?

See Ulaanbaatar on the far left of the map... Based on my "research" Aeroflot doesn't serve Sakhalin. Iceland & Darwin don't get any service from these airlines.
If I ever missed out any cities, it's mainly due to the lack of space (to many routes) - i already tried to fit in as many cities as I could.
Of course there are many other possible new SkyTeam members, but i tried to limit the ones that were frequently speculated on A.net.

I couldn't find any flight (incl codeshares) to MAA out of the present 6 hubs from SkyTeam online timetable. It's probably a mistake in that webpage. At first I thought it was a codeshare with EK or IC but found nothing.

"Aeroflot doesn't serve Sahkalin? Guess it must be AA that takes the oil men there then."
Nope...no SU to UUS currently. Perhaps a partner serves UUS for SU but there is no SU metal.

I think this projected SkyTeam network would also make a rather attractive RTW ticket.
An example here of a passenger flying from Paris assuming a limit of 15 stopovers & 40,000 miles:-
From CDG Paris (home)
AF : CDG-DEL Delhi & Taj Mahal
MH: DEL-KUL-PEN Penang
MH: PEN-BKK Bangkok
CI : BKK-HKG Hong Kong
NW: HKG-NRT Tokyo
NW: NRT-HNL Honolulu
DL : HNL-LAX Los Angeles
CO: LAX-EWR New York
CO: EWR-MCo Orlando & Miami
JJ : MIA-GRU-GIG Rio de Janeiro
JJ : SDU-GRU-IGU Iguacu Falls
JJ : IGU-GRU-EZE Buenos Aires
MH: EZE-CPT Cape Town
KQ: CPT-NBO-JRO Kilimanjaro & Serengeti
KQ: JRO-NBO-SEZ Seychelles
AF: SEZ-CDG Paris (home)
39,100 miles

The maps in the NW on board magazine show DL, CO and NW routes on one map. It's extremely complicated so I can't imagine adding lines for ALL SkyTeam/future Sky and potential Sky partners!
KEno, I think you did a great job capturing the major Int'l flights in a future SkyTeam Alliance!
