Buchanan Field in Concord, California (CCR) is currently being studied by its owner, Conta Costa County, to determine if a better land use can be created by closing the airport and using the 600 acres as housing.
CCR last saw commercial service in 1991 when USAir ended the CCR-LAX service it inherited from PSA. Currently serving general aviation, CCR is home to 500 aircraft and saw 129,000 operations last year.

Surprising, yes. Shocking, no. Whether it's the Bay Area, L. A. Area, Orange/San Diego County, coastal California is in dire need or housing stock. And, let's face it, tax revenue from residential housing typically surpasses that of land for aviation uses.
Hopefully the Conta County Board of Supvs. will realize that with population growth, the need for transportation infrastructure increases. That land for potential new airport sites is expensive to acquire and inceasingly further away from the primary cities to be served.
That area will not get much (if any) more in the way of highways to SFO/OAK/SJC or SMF. The current highway system in that area is congested...not very conducive to travel in an expedient fashion.
Here in the L. A. area, Hawthorne (HHR) is under some threat of potential development. Certainly more GA airports in the coastal zone will come under scrutiny as the population rises.
With a choice between changing one's mind & proving there's no need to do so, most everyone gets busy on the proof.

Since my work is in Concord, I pass by the airport several times a week and on most occasions I never see an airplane taking off or landing. For some reason it's just not as busy as some of the other smaller airports in the Bay Area that caters to private aviation.
Even though there is a good number population in Contra Costa County, it is just as easy to catch the BART train to either Oakland airport or SFO. The Pittsburgh Bay Point line, which is the train the runs through Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Orinda, Lafayette now runs to the International terminal at SFO. This is very convenient it cost about $6.00 or $7.00 one way and takes 1hr 5~15mins. At Walnut Creek station they have extended long term parking for people going to SFO(it's expensive though).
So, this being said any airline trying to start service from Buchanan Field probably would not be sucessful, especially if the airlines only operates the smaller planes. It would seem like most people would rather fly out of SFO in order to take a larger plane.
