Varig 777 AMS-CDG

Varig offers a ride on a 777 between AMS and CDG for only 38 Euro excl. taxes. I did an effort to book this "budget air" flight on http://www.vliegwinkel.nl and http://www.schiphol.nl many times. Never managed to book this flight. Somehow the flight is never available. That pisses me off!

Now I have a few questions regarding this flight:
Anyone booked this flight successfully?
If the answer is yes, how are they? Do they provide full service?
If the answer is no, what the heck is the problem?

Of course any other comment about Varig 777 AMS-CDG is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Had a great flight about a year ago, but in the other direction, CDG-AMS. Flight is very short, about 40 mins so no full meal but a sandwich with a drink. I flew as a non-rev (standby) so no idea how to book the flight. Good Luck in booking the flight!

I just wonder why abroad VARIG charges such prices while in Brazil they have awfully the highest fares without a good enough service suitable to the price.

That's maybe for justifying to have an extension to AMS, since KLM already flies the route from AMS to Brazil nonstop with better prices and also relatively good services as well.
For many years KLM used their B747 to Brazil, then has just changed to B777 after VARIG started operating this route too.

As for this thread, I really don't have any piece of information yet about it.

(this VARIG's flight route is POA - GRU - CDG - AMS)
* POA = Porto Alegre

To Aviationfreak:

if you go to www.travelocity.ca and try to book the leg AMS - CDG or the other way around you can purchase the ticket on Varig Airlines.

I have tried it few times and it works and you can make the reservation with no problems.

Hope it helps.

You´re doing something wrong!

I just found the 38 euro fare per leg on may 14th AMS-CDG and CDG-AMS on the 15th of may... on vliegwinkel.nl...

total cost however is 134,50 if you include taxes plus a whopping 25 euro for cost of the reservation... do the math, that´s 159,50 euro return.

(350 oude guldens, niet echt wat je noemt goedkoop dus)

The reason Varig flies to AMS is to deliver and pick up cargo. After Varig cancelled their weekly cargo flight (operated by Martinair) this was the only way they could service AMS. Moreover, most passengers on this flight fly between CDG and GRU and a seat whch is sold is always better then one unsold.

Klm-md11 bedankt,

Didn't know the fare was per leg. The total costs are quite expensive indeed. Although I split the reservation costs with a group if I go. But it looks like KLM and AF fares are cheaper. But their flight will not be with a 777.
So I must try harder huh? Thanks for the info anyway.

BTW I can't appreciate your signature.

I remember reading an aritcle about Varig not too long ago, and it stated that Varig only had 5th Freedom riights between London/Heathrow and Copenhagen on its international flights. When were they granted these rights on the AMS-CDG route?

Ok, I've just had the possibility to book this flight. Still don't know why I couldn't book this special fare before. The 38 Euro fare is a return fare. With taxes it will be Euro 94,50. Reservation costs are Euro 25 and the penalty of using a creditcard Euro 10. Total costs Euro 129,50. I'll split the extra 35 Euro with a friend who's also an aviation enthusiastic and the fare would be 112 Euro then. Slightly cheaper than KLM or AF plus we will fly a 777 for the first time of our lives. Maybe a third friend is coming along who never flew before.

Mmmm, I think there is clearly a market for LCC's between these two cities.

Horus, good question. I'd like to know that too. What I do know is that this flight exist a while know.

Thanks for the help.

Easy AMS-CDG?

I had a look at the site of the Schiphol slot coordination, EZY has slots this summer between AMS and TXL and AGP!! (besides the current destinations)

IF EZY will fly AMS-CDG this will mean even worse results for THALYS who are already struggling to fill their trains, and even canceled one daily train since last fall due to lack of pax.

I doubt EZY will fly to TXL, I think you mean SXF.

CDG or Orly will become a big money-maker for EZY and it will force KL/AF to reduce their ridicilous fares into Paris.

hello

I took this flight many times booking it from french sites but it never seamed easy for mee to book this precise flight on vliegwinkel either...
it's cool to fly in a 777 for such a stroll: the plane is generally 4/5 empty and the 777 experience itself with one T.O and landing within 45 minutes is fun

Thalys in difficulties? whats a surprise!!!!! at 160€ the ticket to Paris and back in 2nd class (=no sandwich or drink) I take AF anyday!!!

hope EZ will come, at least they mentionned it

As far as I know they don't need these rights as there is an open sky in Europe. They sold the tickets right from the start (more than a year ago).

expect easyJet (EZY) to announce Amsterdam to Paris CDG or Orly airport in a very short time!

rumours of such a service have been circulating for years. I personnaly doubt that easyJet will start Amsterdam - Orly as the competition is fierce (Thalys offers cheap fares nowadays).

Good for us! But I'm sure KLM and AF wouldn't like that.

They wouldn't care much. AMS-CDG is for AF and KL a very important feeder flight (AF for its CDG hub and KL for its AMS hub). Although there is much local traffic I doubt it will have a major impact for KL and AF (they just cancel a few flights and/or fly with smaller aircraft) as many companies will never fly with easyJet anyway (thanks to all the travel deals these two airlines have with large multinationals) and others either use the Thalys or drive.

Lj,

You could be right. A LCC service between AMS-Paris would probably more competitive to the Thalys than it would be to AF or KL. However this combined airline, have the monopoly. I'm sure a monopolist would never be happy with competition. Besides I've been to London with EZY a few times and there were a lot of businessmen on board who would be traveling with Bmi, BA or KL if there was no other option. Let's wait and see.

When Germanwings started flights between CGN and CDG, Thalys canceled 1 daily train on the Cologne to Paris line because of this!

It is true however that on LCC you´d pay the same price for either a train or a plane ticket...

Dear dutch neighbors

you shouldn't believe this add campaign we see these days indicating "parijs noord 69€ met Thalys" at every corner of the streets....

just go to www.ns.nl and try to book one!!!! ok, if you book 2 months in advance and travel everyday except a friday or sunday/monday, maybe you have a chance....otherwise I paid many times 136€ or even 160€!! at this price even AF is the same price if not cheaper: I often pay 119€ for an AMS-CDG-AMS all taxes included with AF

we're a lot of "commuters" to wait for a LCC on CDG-AMS
car is a killer in winter and in the summer....again travel anyday but friday

one of the conditions for the KL/AF merger was that they abandonned frequencies on AMS-CDG, and easyjet publicly stated they were interested

I just went to varig.co.uk and booked myself a trip on their 777 for £52.10 all inclusive! Ticket is sent from the London reservations office and there's no additional fee for this.

If the market is perfect (which probably it isn't) this would mean that people are prepared to more to go by train....

Problem with easyJet is that you never know how serious they are about expanding at AMS (and especially if it means an AMS-non UK flight). They've expressed intrest in the past (up to the point it was "almost" certain they woulkd start) but never actually did. Moreover I haven't seen easyJet expanding in the non-Uk market ex AMS in the recent years (they only downsized their non-UK operations).

I fly this route all the time, its a good alternative when AF/KL's fares are a bit too expensive and the 777 is a nice change from the narrowbodies flown by the afore mentioned companies!

On the Varig website, I only get quotes of fares of €168 and higher.

Even when www.vliegwinkel.nl quotes me €38 + tax, it's still much more expensive on the RG website...
