Why Do FA's Run Thier Arms On Top Of Overhead Bins

Posted (10 years 4 months 3 weeks 23 hours ago) and read 5051 times:

I notice that once they FA's close the overhead bins for departure, the FA that is up in the front of the plane who belongs in the back starts heading towards the aft. While doing this, he/she runs his/her's hand on top of the overhead bins.

Why do they do this?

To make sure that all overhead bins are closed properly.

Or in the case of the really old f/a's, for balance, because their itty bitty legs can't support their weight.  Big grin

Hell i do it and i'm not an FA! It is an easy way to keep your balance when the flight gets bumpy but ya really have to use the toilet.

As a flight attendant I do it for balance and to make sure the bins are closed. Sometimes with a powerback or tug push you can get jerked around and end up in someones lap.

They do this to make sure they're secure prior to take-off. Otherwise if they weren't secure they would fling open on rotation.

Back in the good 'ol days they probably used rope to secure down the luggages in the overhead compartments so they wouldnt go all over the place on rotation.

I've never thought of doing that... so many times, I would walk in the cabin to verify passengers (tickets not lifted, etc.) and would accidently bump into a passenger just from loosing balance. LOL.

I used to do it on finals as well a before departure. You'd be amazed how many pax think they had the bin shut, especially during turbulence. And there's nothing like a bin popping open on landing; especially with thrust reversers wide open.  Big grin

I have always wondered about this too. I do it (I'm not an F/A) anyway while walking through the aisle - basically in case of turbulence, I have something to grab onto to stop myself from falling or losing balance. Especially on a plane with a tiny aisle, it's good to hold onto something.

Powerback is used when no tug is available and, so they use the thrust reversers on the aircraft to back the plane away from the gate.

I think B747-437B was only kidding. Airline personnel often get hassled with comments like "You can't tell people how you shut-off an aircraft!" and "Hey, that information is privileged!" I myself thought B747-437B's joke was quite funny.
