I know its a bit after the fact, because this picture was taken last May, but does anyone know why this plane was in Portland? The caption says there was two QF 744's in PDX that day...strange.

From memory, there were 2 744's at PDX for a few weeks in May or June 2003. Both were undergoing a repaint.
Cheers.

I believe that would be for a repaint. But why do they go all the way to PDX for a repaint? Cheaper, possibly?

They paint NZ planes at PDX also. They painted John Travolta's 707 at PDX.

PDX is sometimes used for test runs (pre-delivery) for some flights out of boeing field. I have seen ANA, Japan, Qantas, American's 777. ANA was a touch & go 777-very cool!

That is a confirmation on the repaint at PDX. I remember seeing a photo in an aircraft magazine (Airliner World I think) as well as in Australian Aviation under Aircraft movements.

Do not know why as 747's are painted in Sydney as well, maybe to test try it or maybe it was cheaper or the previous job was under warranty.

Qantas in February recently sent one of its A332's back to Tolouse for a repaint as it was still under warranty.
