Must've taken over the old 763ER service of Lauda. They've always had a presence in KTH.

Like Air Taiwan said, Air Lauda used to fly there and now Austrian operates there on a weekly basis (OS031). I think it's a seasonal service only, as it doesn't show over the summer months. It will become 2x weekly when re-introduced in the winter.

Wasn't the OS flight once routed via Del?

Mrniji:
yes, that is right. That was when the flight was operated by B763 and/or A332. Both a/c would be too heavy to climb out of KTM in case of an engine failure on T/o when fully fueled for the 8:30h flight to Vienna. The A340 due to the 4-engine arrangement can do it, though.
For some time the 2nd weekly OS-flight starting in Sep04 was routed via DEL as it was planned to be operated by A332. Since about two weeks ago it is uploaded into the res-system with A343 and hence nonstop both directions!

 Big grin

Dear Airmale, I am at the moment in LON, doing my MA, but grew up in Germany (18 yrs) and the States (where I was born), have Indian parents, originally from Pakistan Punjab (Jhang)... I change my flag regularily to show that I want to belong to everyone and have a mixed identity...  Wink/being sarcastic I just want to feel home in all countries in the world and try to keep out pf political issues... That has nothing to do with national pride...

Hey, are you going to the cricket matches? I will be in LHE from 5-9th for the 2nd test... maybe I see you there, who knows??
Take care...

That's why the national carrier flys B757-200. I guess they know best the proper plane for their altitude.

Does that mean that the huge 777 isn't appropriate for landing in cities lake KTM due to the danger of engine failure? Interesting... that could make the A340 superior for these kind of cities

And how about for similar cities like La Paz? I remember (not 100 % sure) that LH used its four-engined 747 for La Paz some time ago (with a stopover before?).

As far as I know IC flights to Leh (732) are not supposed to be fully loaded, too.

If the B777 operating the route is an ER version, it might make the restriction. This being more thrust is available on the ER's engines and there would be a higher thrust:weight ratio.

Note that the B767/A332 might be pretty near it's weight limits for a 8:30min flight.

Well, to answer the original question, service to KTM started Sept. 24 1998. The service as initially operated by A310, then changed to A330/340, all with a stop in DEL on the way back. About two years ago the service was transferred to Lauda Air, partially even operated by Lauda Italy. Due to poor service and even very negative customer response (esp. due to Lauda Italy), the service was taken over by OS again, still operating via DEL. As of winter 03/04, the return flight is operated nonstop. As usual during the northern summer, the service will be suspended and restarted in September 04. The peak season then will see a second weekly flight.

Thai use a 777 to KTM as did Aeroflot, I dont think TG's are ER versions.

Mrniji hope you have fun, and enjoy your stay in Lahore, as for me I despise Cricket, an oddity in our part of the world.

But both SVO and BKK are significantly shorter routes than VIE, especially BKK, so it might not be so much of an issue for the 777.
By the way the limiting factor in KTM is not the altitude. Unlike La Paz, KTM is not at altitude. The limiting factor is the mountains surrounding the airport. It's really a jaw-dropping site to see the airplanes look so tiny against that backdrop.
