Lufthansa 343 Or 744 Or United 777 On IAD-FRA

I will be traveling to FRA from IAD. There are a total of 4 flights a day. Two operated by Lufthansa on a 744 and 343 and 2 operated by United on 777.
Which one would you recommend in terms of comfort, service, entertainment etc. ? I've flown Lufthansa's 744 and I would like to try the 343 since I've never been on one. I also haven't flown United transatlantic although I've been on a 777-200.

Either is a great choice. UA's 777s have 18.5 inch wide seats on the 777 as well as PTVs and two meal services. LH's 343s have 17 inch wide seats, but no PTVs. The meal service on LH is probably better, but if you fly United there is a chance you'll get economy plus (it's REALLY great on a longhaul flight!!!)

The choice is yours, but either is an excellent choice!

Thanks for flying the Star Alliance!

The opinions expressed here are mine and not necessarily those of Delta Air Lines.

Interesting choice...all three are great airplanes.

I'd recommend the 747 simply because the Queen of the Skies may not be with us for an extended period of time. Even some of the 744's are approaching the end of their life cycle, so if you're a fan, you might want to fly one while you still can.

The 343 is fairly young and will be around for a while, but that does not detract from it being a great airplane. Same with the 777. Flights on both will continue for many years.

You might try one flight on each airline - it will give you a chance to compare United's International Service with Lufthansa's.

Have a great trip!!

I agree that you might want to try one flight in each direction. I love the UA 777's, but I must say that I don't think that anything compares with the mighty 744!

Regardless of what you decide, have a wonderul trip!

Than the decision would be easy for me, I would choose the planes I've never flown on, in your case LH 343 and UA 772. Another advantage is that you get a flight on two different airlines, in my opinion is it always interesting to compare airlines and aircraft types.

I might get bashed, but I say:

Perfectionism: LH
Fun: UA

I would love to have PTV, Premium-Eco and IFE-CH-9 on LH...that can't be beaten by anything...

What about AA and other carriers? Not this route?

I had the opportunity to fly on both airlines across the pond recently, UA 777 and LH 343

Servicewise, LH is indeed the far superior carrier: better and more food, better choice of drinks, many more drinks runs (choice of water and juice served on a tray instead of refilling the plastic cups straight from the bottle as UA does). And, despite the very popular Lufthansa bashing by several other members on the A.net, LH cabin crew are very friendly and helpful.

The others are right, Lufthansa IFE leaves something to be desired, however, I very much prefer to sleep onboard instead of watching films. Call me old-fashioned, but for the real movies nothing beats the good old cinema screen.

Choose wisely ... and enjoy your flight.

Elegant flying to all of us

I have taken all of the three on the transatlantic, and in view of your choices I have to say that the UA 777 is by far the best alternative, in my view (PTV etc). The UA 777 are really highy recommendable

The 744 and 343 are great aircraft too, but LH doesn't offer PTVs in Eco, if you insist on this. If you don't care, I would go for the 343, since in my eyes it is the quietest (4 eng) and smoothest aircraft I have flown

But all of them are almost equally good... Tell us how you decided

I always fly LH, so i would pick UA in this case! They have wider seats and PTV's... which i kind of miss when i fly LH.

Hey there

I would suggest this. On ur overnight eastbond flight (iad-fra)
I would choose LH. The reason being that you are most likely going to sleep
on this flight anyway, and the lack of PTV thus won't come into it as much.
Pick the A340 if you are planning to sleep, because its the easiest to get to the aisle. Pick the 747 if you want to experience the sheer joy. Then take united on the way back to the states. (daytime ur up and probably watch PTV)

LH is a good operation... its good value for money and always punctual. If you have to be there ontime fly LH.
However, UA is operating probably offering a little more on the route due to the PTV's and the fact the 777 has wide seats.... although if your sleeping your better off in an A340(if you need to pee a lot that is). I think on intercontinental flights, UA is offering a lot more for economy passengers than say, american.(im still cheesed about having to pay for wine on AA).

One more point. If you are, or are travelling with somebody under 21, you can drink on a European airline. I bet if you were 15 you could get away with it on AF or Alitalia.
Also if your working, you probably don't care about ptv.... so the LH food might entice. But then again, united serve starbucks coffee....
Let us all know what you choose.

I have taken the Lufthansa 343 between FRA and DFW. The service is impeccable and the flight was very nice. My only complaint is the leg room. The woman in front of me reclined and her head was in my lap. I could have styled her hair. When I traveled on UA I did not have this problem.

Of course, I travel AA most of the time and am little spoiled by MRTC.

Hi, I have to say I have only travelled back and forth from America twice on American Airlines on a 777 and I loved it. Free stuff galore, I watched Everybody Loves Raymond loads, drunk loads of coke and had plenty of leg room for my strangely long legs! The engines were considerably quiet considering their size and the comfort was incredible. Can't say much about the other 2 as I haven't been on them but I'm sure they are just as good. Have a good journey!

Thanks LHRman  Big thumbs up

Always after the picture you can't get..

I have done AMS-FRA-LAX-IAH-AMS. Onwards on LH 744 and back on
united 772. I found LH to be OK , but nothing quite exceptional, while
united was great. I was in economy plus, the meals were great as was
the IFE!! I would recommend United.
