I remember flying LHR-CDG in the early 90's on Air Inter Europe.
What happened to AIE? I am assuming it was merged back into Air France? Did it ever operate as a separate airline, or was it just a way of rebranding Air Inter?
What was the rationale for creating an airline within an airline?

It got merged into AF proper. It was originally supposed to be a way of integrating AF and IT's short haul operations into a cheap European carrier, but presumably the AF syndics were having none of it, and so the whole of IT got merged into AF. I flew on them ORY-MRS-ORY during their brief existence - my first 319 as I recall.

Apparently it all went wrong for them when they started using the A333 on busy domestic routes like Paris-Toulouse(with high seating capacity 300+). The airline thought it could attract passengers away from competitors by offering greater capacity with fewer frequency, but instead passengers prefered to fly with airlines that offered shuttle services (i.e. high frequency). AF used their A330s for a while before getting rid of them. Does anybody know which airlines operate them now?
