AMS-DTW-IAD Custom/Transfers

Hi All,

I will have to transfer on flight from AMS to IAD at DTW. I was wondering how the process will look like. Do I have to pick up my bags at DTW and go to the check in desk again? Or I will have to go just thru customs and I wont have to worry about them?

The system is the same at every U.S. airport. All passengers must clear customs and immigration at the first point of arrival. You will have to claim your bags at DTW and go through customs. After customs, there will be a transfer desk where you can check your bags for your onward connection.

You arrive at DTW on the lowest level. Once you have cleared Customs and Immigration, and rechecked your bags it is an easy escalator ride up to the departure level.

No changing of terminals at DTW. Really a great advantage over places like ORD.
