Miles Instead Of Dollars For A Bump?

My upcoming flight from EWR-PVR is overbooked, and I would like to know if anyone has ever been able to get OnePass miles instead of dollar vouchers from CO. As odd as it may seem, miles would actually be more useful than vouchers for my situation. Has anyone ever had any success with this? Do any CO employees know how a gate agent would handle that request?

Thanks a ton for the info.

I am not sure how CO works but at every airline I have worked at airport agents have no control over frequent flier miles. I would call the one pass service line and ask them your question.

If you have questions like this why not call the airline to begin with?

I dont think that this is a possibility, airlines try to keep their FFE is a seperate world and rarely make negotiated offers with miles.

Also, with CO, you would have to be careful with a mile offer - say they would offer you 25,000 miles not to fly on your flight due to an overbooking, would these be miles that would could towards elite status? Probably not, since they were not actually flown.

I don't really care about elite status, I don't fly enough to ever even come close to getting it (and especially not with CO's new 50% EQM policy for low fares). I'm not going to even bother calling CO because their agents can't due much else but book tickets, and even then, they are still clueless.

I doubt the gate agent would be authorized to do this. Besides, a voucher with monetary value is almost always worth more than miles – especially OnePass miles!

Just out of curiosity why would you want miles? You can definitly do more with a travel certificate.

I called today to check for flights from EWR-OGG for my family next February. Normally, I would do it online, but the website would not price out EWR-IAH-OGG at all, regardless of the options I picked. This is my verbatim conversation:

Me: "Hi, I'd like to look into an itinerary for flights from Newark to Maui on February 4 to February 12."

Agent: "I'm sorry sir, but Continental does not fly planes (can you believe she said that?) to Maui."

Me: "Actually, I believe that Continental has a non-stop from Houston to Maui. I can go from Newark to Houston to Maui."

Agent "No, you're wrong. We have no planes that go to Maui that I know of."

Me: "Well, I'd appreciate it if you could just look for me. Maybe there's a flight that you are unaware of."

Agent: "Humph. Okay, but I'm only going to get connections in Honolulu to Hawaiian Airlines."

Me: "Okay, well I appreciate your efforts."

Agent: "Wow, what do you know! We do have a flight to Maui from Houston. I never knew that! And wait, we serve Honolulu from Newark without stopping? I can't believe that a plane can make it that far! Maybe it's one of those extra-long-range 737s."

Me: "Thank you for finding them for me."

She gave me the fare info and I thanked her for her time. An extra-long-range 737 from EWR-HNL? What company is she working at? I know that CO likes to use their "market-demand" ERJs and 737s, but that's ridiculous.

I think CO's using an extended range ERJ for that flight. They have equipped it with drop tanks. WOW ! Eleven hours or so on an ERJ.

A terminal customer service agent gave me 2000 miles on top of vouchers as compensation for a major mistake at CVG back in 2001. It showed up on my mileage statement when I got it 2 weeks later.

Sort of on the same subject, which did make me laugh, had a quick look at the CO website to see about the non-stop EWR-HNL flights in their "long - range 737's". It states in coach that there are no meals served. That flight is 10 1/2 hours. I know the airlines are cutting back, but is that correct?

That can't be correct. CO serves light meals on their flights between EWR-IAH which are only about three hours long and between EWR-PHX at about 4 and a half hrs. They are only hot sandwiches but at least they are something. When I took CO EWR-HNL we had lasagna as our main meal and then a cold sandwich during the last three hours of the flight. There were also numerous snack and beverage services during the flight, so you will definitely have something. However if you happen to get a super extended long range ERJ it may just be a cold sandwhich and a bag of pretzels.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

You must’ve flown this flight before they initiated cuts last fall… when I did it during the Christmas holiday there was a meal (a no-choice chicken sandwich) and large snack box. There were only three full beverage services (one during the meal, one after the meal and one during the snack) and just coffee/water the rest of the time (although I guess you could request a specific beverage). It’s also worth noting that 90% of the time, if you ask for pop, you’ll have to ask for the can if you desire it.

I'm not a big eater, but I didn't think it was a lot to eat on a 12-hour flight (including the minor ground delay) considering I only had breakfast that day (the flight departed at 2PM or so). This was especially true given what they served was crap (it was good on HNL-IAH, however).

My opinion: bring your own grub/snacks...
