I heard on local radio today that mp's are calling for ABZ to become a 24 HR airport and remove the 23:30-05:00 curfew. What are your thoughts on this ??, I think it is a good Idea and would encourage more operators to use ABZ and then that may justify lenghthening the runway.

I'm not sure of how dense the housing is near to ABZ and whether flightpaths could be used to minimise disruption. Virtually every other UK regional airport now has 24-hour operations, so unless there are exceptional circumstances then why should ABZ be restricted?
In these cases, the NIMBY's always seem to assume that flights will be coming and going all night, every night and causing untold disruption to sleep.
The reality would be that maybe only a couple of night-flights per week would be scheduled from ABZ during the summer, these most likely being charters and only the quietest aircraft allowed to be used (ie A320's/738's). The big advantage for the airport however, is that if a daytime/evening flight is delayed it will still be allowed to land at ABZ rather than having to divert to EDI or GLA. This flexibility is what the airlines like about 24-hour operations at airports and it can only be good for ABZ if the restriction is lifted.
