Airtran's Future PHL Plans?

Greetings,

After several months of going into Airliners.net to check out photos and reading through various aviation discussion forums, I decided to join in the fun and post my first topic.

With all the headlines and hubbub regarding WN (and F9 to a lesser degree) setting up shop at PHL this May; my questions are:

1. What's FL's plans for any addition or expansion at PHL? Prior to WN's initial announcement about Philly, Airtran seemed to be getting all the attention and headlines. According to DOA (City of Philadelphia's Division Of Aviation NOT Dead On Arrival) records and a Philly Inquirer article written around last August or September, Airtran experienced the largest percentage (18%, I believe) of passenger growth during the past year out of every airline servicing PHL.

2. Have they (FL) made any changes to their PHL service growth or expansion plans in response to WN coming to town? I do know that FL has since added a third PHL-BOS flight (I use this route for the occasional Saturday day-trip to visit family and friends) and started non-stop service to PBI (1 flight); I'm not sure of any other additional flights since last fall.

Personally, I'd like to see FL add some routes similar to what they're doing at BWI (non-stops to DFW, CAK, plus PHF). Seeing that WN was already well-entrenched when FL came to BWI about 2 years ago; one would hope that the 2 carriers can co-exist at PHL. Just out of curiosity, does anybody (especially any 'Airtraners' in this forum) have any 'genuine' info.? I do recall Joe Leonard stating that for 2004, Airtran was going to focus on 'connecting the dots' as opposed to adding new cities.

Any answers or insights would be much appreciated.

After looking at FL's summer schedule PHL-MCO remains at 4 daily rather than going back down to 3 daily in the summer. PHL-BOS goes up to 4 daily Fri-Sun and 3 daily the rest of the week, and PHL-ATL goes to up 6 daily. Also PHL-RSW is a seasonal route while PHL-PBI is an all year round daily flt.

All in all Airtran is hovering around 18-20 daily flts in PHL, which is the most they've ever had. However when WN comes in they will be directly competing with FL on most of their florida routes. As of yet i haven't seen much of a reaction by FL to this.

Airtran has some room to grow in PHL and i think should have another gate available to them if they need it. Should be interesting to see what kind of move they make in the next few months with WN coming in.

It will be interesting to see how AirTran reacts and adapts to Southwest's arrival in Philadelphia. Generally-the two have kept clear of direct competition with each other, so this will be interesting to watch. Southwest will also be directly competing with ATA to Chicago Midway and Frontier to LAX. As for AirTran...its a good sign to see BOS getting increased service. This route has always worried me due to US's hourly service and the fact they flew it as ValuJet and early into the new AirTran before dropping it entirely. I guess the second time around is seeing some success?

It would be nice to see all of PHL's LCC (WN, FL, TZ, U5, etc.) coexist. It would make flying so much easier for all of us here in Philly. I wonder if they would consider try the PHL-PIT flights again. I do like US, but ultimately, it would be nice to see airfares here come down.

When FL announced last year that it was re-entering the Philly-Boston route; US was still in bankruptcy. I guess FL figured that with US being still somewhat wounded (unlike 1998, when FL dropped the route in favor of non-stop service to ATL and US was actually 'healthy') after emerging out of Chapter 11 PLUS the fact that FLs route is being handled by brand-new 717s as opposed their now-retired DC9s; they could give it another go.

With WN having a PHL-PVD route and later a PHL-MHT (when will PHL-BDL service be added?), this may actually give FL another incentive to either keep the route or expand on it.

Nonetheless, air travel to New England will be even more affordable in the coming months.

i am glad for the new service in and out of philly. i make 4-5 trips a year to philly from phx to see relatives in the philly area, and always have paid in the high 300 to low 400 for r/t fares. if not, i fly into bwi, and that sucks. looking at my trips for may and june, i am finally finding fares lower than 200 r/t. it amazes me how well hp does on the phx-phl route. even their night flight goes out with loads of 80% or greater more than half the week.

I believe that FL is going to focus there attention mostly on DCA and BWI. As we get more planes and when we start getting 737's I am sure that there are going to more flights out of PHL but nothing to the scale that WN is talking about I see a couple more PHL-BOS and PHL-Florida flights along with some west coast flights. I think the major point here is what is going to happen in DCA and BWI with FL

PHL-DFW would probably be a very good route for AirTran. Their BWI-DFW daily has done so well that they're adding a second daily in June. The Wright Amendment and Southwest's refusal to enter DFW open lots of opportunities for AirTran.

Also, since FL isn't afraid to go right into network-carrier hubs, PHL-MSP would likely be another profitable opportunity.

I think our future at DFW is good, no matter where we fly but I would prefer to see more flights to the West Coast before the East Coast. People in the DFW area can get to the East Coast via our ATL hub. There is hardly ANY low-fare competition out West..........except for HP and F9. No low-fare competition on a non-stop basis.

According to the marketing director at CAK, PHL is the market with the most demand that is not served with a nonstop flight. Why US never committed RJ service is beyond me. If the CAK-BOS service does as well as the CAK-LGA service, you can expect the fine folks at CAK to push for PHL...

FL started in BWI after LUV was already entrenched with a couple hundred flights. I believe that with maybe the exception of MCO they have more departures from BWI than anywhere in the system except ATL. I think the product is better and PHL is already somewhat familiar with FL. They should do ok, but I can't help but wonder if FL already had 50-60 departures from PHL, would LUV have stayed out? If so, this could have been an opportunity lost.

On the other hand maybe they are keeping dry powder for DCA if it ever opens up. If you have your costs in check, you can go into almost any USAir hub (or similar airline with similar costs) and make a killing.

Now that we here in PHF are getting a nonstop to BOS, I personally would love to see PHF-PHL as my sister lives in Pennsylvania.
