Just wondering if there are any freelance flight instructors in the USA on the board here. I am a flight instructor for a major university, and will be home for 3 months over the summer. Since most FBOs would want to hire flight instructors who will be with them longer than that, I am thinking of going freelance for the summer, and being affiliated with an FBO that I used to fly out of, that had all freelance instructors.
Anyone out there have any tips about freelancing, of how to get students, or anything else?

You should go and talk to the flight schools around where you will be during the summer and discuss your situation with them. Who knows, they just might want you....summer is by far the busiest time for most schools. For example, my school was turning down people left and right during the winter and now we're actively interviewing for multiple positions...myself and the other current instructors are getting strained to our limits.
Also, consider the fact that many schools allow you to be a contractor with them -- they do not hire you and you are not employed by them. You are just an independent who is allowed to instruct there. See if that is possible aswell.

I'd gladly fly with you...but I don't have my double I yet. With the basic CFI-A, I can teach private and commercial, as well as do BFR's and checkouts. I'll hopefully be at an airport in the north/northwest/west suburbs, hopefully DuPage or Lake In The Hills.

WOW, thats awsome...didnt know you where gonna be in the Chicago area. I fly normally out of Shaumburg...06C, but i fly to lake in the hills to pick up my instructor, hes one of my good friends and i do lessons with him. Even if you dont have the CFII, its no big deal......it would be cool just to go up with ya. Give a shought out on this board when your in town and we can meet up or something. BTW, Shaumburg might even hire you for the summer. Northwest flyers......847-958-9777
