In a surprisingly logical move on Tuesday, the Indian government's Ministry of Civil Aviation finally approved a long pending proposal that permits both Air India and Indian Airlines to lease in aircraft types as per their commercial requirements rather than requiring them to receive ministry approval to add a new aircraft type as is the current system.
This clears the way for Air India to proceed with its proposed acquisition of Airbus 340-300s and Boeing 737-800s on a lease-in basis while the various government bureaucracies continue to process the approval for purchase of the aircraft.
The Air India board is next expected to meet in early May and will consider floating tenders for new aircraft types at that time.

Hear Boeing's been whispering sweet nothings in AI's ear... any chance they'll overturn the decision on A340s (be nice if they went for A32x instead as well... but one can only hope )

...not unless they are prepared to pay some serious and significant bribes to corrupt and venal politicians in the Civil Aviation Ministry and members of Air India's board. Thats the only way things get done there.

I still cant see why cant Air India buy the new aircrafts? I dont think finance will be much of a problem, but the politics and beraucracy has always been a major hurdle. Air India is trying to buy new aircrafts for the past decade i think.

and what makes you think they are not prepared to, or did not try to, pay bribes?
Aah yes, because American corporations cannot pay bribes unlike French companies...
...
But there is nothing stopping Boeing from paying "marketing support fees" to consultants and local agents, who use the money to pay bribes....just as Boeing, Airbus, Coca Cola etc have done in India for YEARS...

Following your own logic, Boeing must be prepared to pay bribes. How would they have gotten the 737-800 orders otherwise, as, per your logic, "Thats the only way things get done there."?

Boeing once said (pre 9/11) that if Air India got 50 B744s tomorrow, 'it would only be a drop in their ocean of capacity'. Does this mean the A380 may be ordered? Isn't there some Indian aerospace firm that is building a part of the super jumbo?

Horus,
That Boeing quote was from an Airways magazine blurb that had an amazing looking B772 in AI livery.
The way things move in India, the A380 may be out of production by the time AI actually signs an order.

IC is also leasing in 7 A319's and 4 A320's which will join the fleet in time for the winter schedule. The A319's are for subsidiary Alliance Air (CD) whose 732's are disintegrating.

Oh come on Roy... those 732s are old yes but definitely not falling to bits as you make it sound. Believe me there are far worse aircraft flying around in the US with leading airlines.
Make no mistake, its time these planes are replaced but these 732s have rendered yeoman service to Indian Airlines and later to Alliance and deserve a better level of respect from us. Plus if you go thru the safety records of IC, you will see that all its 737 crashes were a result of pilot error or other human factors. The aircraft or maintenance was never to blame for any of them.
