This is my second favorite jet,the 747 being number 1. So, because it didn't meet it's performance specs, is that the only reason it didn't sell well?

The 777 was on it's way.

I like the MD-11 too.
I like the fact that the wings are more swepted back than the DC-10.

All newer jets have less swept wings.

I love the MD-11 too, flew it 4 times from JFK-GRU. These guys are right though, the 777 killed it and it's not so practical these days. Too bad, I like it more than the 767.

I think it's a shame to see airplanes that young being stored, some being only around 10 years old... I hope they all end up cargo or charter instead of sitting there, or worst broken up.

I imagine they can be bought second hand at a bargain and there a plenty of parts availible.
They would be ideal for charter or budget carriers.

I wish Hawaiian Airlines bought these as there DC-10 replacement. I miss there shiny silver DC-10s flying here to SFO.  Sad

Doesn't the MD-11 and 777 share a common fuselage?

What?

Well they're 2-5-2 seating like most 777s but the MD-11 uses the same fuselage as the DC-10.

MD-11. Got 3 words:

Amazing. Beautiful. Priceless.

Such a shame that airlines are getting rid of it!!! I personally think Varig's colors look THE BEST on the MD11

I can't say I ever liked working with the MD-11, though I didn't spend much time with it. I also didn't much care for the MD-88s or MD-90s either. Not that they were bad aircraft. At least they didn't corrode. However, the documentation and drawings left a lot to be desired, when compared to the Boeings, especially the newer models (i.e. 757 & 767).

One of the MD-11's biggest problems was that McD tried to spend as little money as possible and kept to many features from the DC-10. This really dated the airframe. Of course they did some things right, Boeing is using the trailing edge shape from the MD-11 on the 777-200LR/300ERs.

I had the pleasure of flying on one with Delta last year. It was a great plane to fly on. Too bad they're becoming difficult to come by. I'm partial to the MD-11 in Delta's classic widget livery myself.

Is this another "new" pax MD-11 for Finnair?

http://www.airliners.net/open.file/549244/L/

Great plane from a passenger perspective. Heard it has a rudder too small compromising low-speed maneuverability.

Yes, forgot to add the three elements mentioned by KLM11 to my MD-11 recipe of good features. Don't know about the best aircraft aviation has ever seen though. Would have to say in my opinion the B747 and the Concorde contradict the MD-11's reign as the best aircraft.
