Has JetBlue started revamping terminal 6 at JFK? Are they going to use any parts of the beautiful old TWA terminal (terminal 5 I believe) that is now vacant? I've heard they might try to combine the two and build a new customs facility in terminal 5. If they revamp terminal 5 as well, will the landside structure be left as it is. What do these planned renovations entail and have they started with it? ANy ideas as to how much it's going to cost? ANyone who can tell me anything about this, thanks a lot.

I mean those classic sweeping designs just suit jetblue perfectly. A swarw hip building for a swarv hip airline. A few updates is needed i guess (unfortunately.... im never one to destroy classic architecture) but hey, could be the grooviest terminal about. The rebirth of cool. What do ya think?

I've thought all along T5 would suit jBlu perfectly! The architecture is truly inspiring and fits their personality. Don't JFK plans include demolition of T5 for a new one? I hope that never happens. Instead of disrupting ops at T6, jBlu can remodel T5 and make a seamless transition between the two when the remodel is complete. I'd love it!

This topic comes up in here from time to time... let me give you the correct info (condensed version):
JetBlue, currently in T6, is in the process of negiotiating with the PANYNJ about building a new T5. The most recent plans include demolishing the current gate areas of T5 and building the new terminal behind the classic Saarinen landmark building. There would also be a roadway behind this building, for arriving passenger pick-up.
The big debate is to what exactly the purpose of the Saarinen building will be. It will technically not be part of JetBlue's terminal, although there will be JetBlue electronic check-in booths and other facilities. As a terminal building, it is woefully unable to handle to day-to-day needs of an airline, something even TWA realized. But its retro charm and style are undeniable. The "tubes" which connect the Saarninen building with the gates will eventually connect the Saarinen building with the actual JetBlue terminal... passengers stepping off the AirTrain, for example, will have to walk through the Saarinen building and the "tube" to get to the JetBlue check-in counters and gates.

First off, for all of you who keep saying that the terminal is not fit for use as is, let me remind you that up until 6 years ago, TWA was pulling 747s from all over the world up to those gates.
The building needs a revamp because TWA was in bad financial shape and couldn't do it, but the terminal could be used as is.
Assuming that this new terminal behind it were for checkin only, would this mean that JetBlue passengers would have to pass through the Saarinen building to get to there gates? It seems like the only place for them to have gates would be in front of the building where they currently are (minus the actual jetways). Can someone please clarify.

No, the plan is to locate the new terminal on the airside of T-5, leaving the parking/airtrain facilities where they are. The terminal 'tubes' would lead into the new building, which would extend to where T-6 is now (T-6 would be torn down). Gates would line the entire facility and passengers would be able to enter through Saarinen's building into the new terminal or directly through where T-6 is now.
This highlights the primary debate between the PANYNJ and the 'purists' wishing to see T-5 remain with direct links to waiting aircraft. They believe T-5 will lose its functional purpose if it simply has a secondary role overshadowed by the new terminal airside.

A few years ago, PANYNJ came up with conceptual drawings for the "wraparound" terminal, which looked like a big fishhook around the back of T5, with a/c parking along the outside of the fishhook. There was one finger pointing to the east, I think, with additional gates. I don't know where the drawings can be found nowadays.
One thing I wonder, looking at the aerial photo US A333 PIT helpfully provided, is if the PA could simply build large one-level extensions around the sides and back of the Saarinen building for check in (east side) and baggage (west side). Or perhaps extend T6 into the space in between the two terminals, and use T5 as an entirely airside building. Such extensions would not harm the 'look' of T5, and would allow it to process much larger numbers of passengers. Also, the eastern T5 airside would need to be much enlarged to provide big enough lounges and concessions for dense traffic.
What is the large rectangular extension to the east of the T5 landside? Old Customs & Immigration area?

It's just an open aired shelter where baggage vehicles were stored, I think some interline baggage transfer happened there but it's opened aired.
T-5 can in no way handle current security needs, the huge scanning equipment would take up way too much room. The ticket counters, baggage, cafeteria, restrooms, and basically every aspect of the terminal was not suitable for modern commercial air travel. TWA knew this but had no way to make improvemens since they had been operating on the verge of extinction for 10-15 years, they could not afford to build new facilities.
Jetblue will get a new terminal which will replace T-6, and somehow be connected to T-5 although T-5 would not be the entrance nor host significant operations of any kind save maybe a E-ticket machine.
I think the size of T-5 is lost on many people, it's a vey small structure dwarfed by the other terminals at JFK. The main terminal (not concourses) of T-5 is about the same size as a large suburban Burger King, really it's quite small.

Are you guys kidding? As much as I like JetBlue, I think their JFK terminal is the worst in the world. It's always under construction, the monitors with flight departures and arrivals are not working all the time. The building itself is old. Maybe it had modern looks 30 years ago. For example, terminal (I think 1), the Lufthansa one is nice, clean and neat.

B6 is planning on getting terminal 5 WITH terminal 6 and THEN leaving terminal 6 in order to find a new terminal (Most likely, yet, it is all talk). The JetBlue terminal is VERY nice if i say so myself and the VP Corporate Real estate is a great guy who knows what he is doing. TV's, Jetblue checkard carpet, food...doesn't get much better
