VARIG has recently received 1 more ex-Swiss MD-11. The aircraft (PP-VTJ) is the 16th of the fleet. The currently wide-body fleet is composed by: 8 767-300, 16 MD-11, and 4 777-200.

Good deal. I'm glad to see more MD-11s are staying around in the passenger mode. If I'm not mistaken, Varig now has the largest passenger MD-11 fleet in the world. Here hoping they'll be around for a few more years yet. Regards.

Hey Tom! How is that terminal at IFP looking! I am dying to see it! As for Varig, I think your right they have a lot of those 11s! , I have flown a few of their 11s to GRU and NAT and I love them! Comfortable, quiet and powerful. I too hope they will be around for a long time. Email me any info on IFP. I may fly there in September if I don't go to the Bad Lands.

Say Nick...still cold where you are? We're in the 80s now here, buddy. About IFP, it's still pretty dusty there but I can see some results already. I think the crew is trying to beat the hot weather before it gets here. Also alot of traffic there recently...Sun Country & Allegiant both. I'll keep you informed.  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

Cold Tom? It has been awful, Easter Sunday consisted of low 40s and rain. I miss life on the Colorado river! I miss Sun Country's birds. ISP only has WN to spot unless you want to see some USAirway's prop jobs or CO's ERJs. I have heard a rumor Varig is going to have some 777 service from GRU-JFK. Anybody hear this? The 777 is one of the only Commercial Jets I have not flown and I may have to fly my woman up here for a visit this summer. Tom keep your ears and eyes open there, I hope a new carrier comes to IFP when that terminal gets done. I plan to spend a lot of time at IFP this winter and I want some new birds to photograph!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Yes. That´s right NIKV69. Varig has received 2 777-200 (PP-VRC, PP-VRD), which will start VARIG daily flight to JFK this month.
VARIG also started flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town, flying with an MD-11. There are rumors that Varig will soon start operations to Zürich and Beijing, also with MD-11s. Can anyone confirm that for me please??

GUGA,

Thanks! I thought it was true! Now I hope that Varig's internet deals from JFK-GRU are using the 777! Though I never liked to fly over water unless I was on a three engine plane I would love to try the 777! I will go on Varig's web site and do some research. I love Varig! Great Airline!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Varig at ZRH? That would be great! Maybe a chance to see some of the former Swiss / Swissair MD-11 at ZRH again! Would be very cool.
Has anyone more info on that?

Interesting approach that Varig is taking, acquiring new 777s and building up its MD11 fleet at the same time.....I assume that Varig is getting a very good lease deal on the ex-Swiss MD11s.

What become of Varig's 767-200 fleet - I believe at one time RG had 6 767-200ERs that it acquired new from Boeing.

Dutchjet, I think that Varig is not acquiring new 777s - I think they snatched up used ones... the ex-BA/Khalifa 777s for example.

Happy contrails,

It's good to see those three holers still flying around. I wish Boeing would go back and try to fix some of the shortcomings of the MD11. If they could bring it up to where the original projections were for it, maybe they'd actually get a few orders...Wishful thinking. Sigh.

AirTran737,

I love those three holers too! I wish they were improved upon becuase they are a great aircraft. Varig can get rid of all their 767s in my opinion I had to fly one from GRU-JFK and found it uncomfortable and noisy compared to the MD-11. It is such a great plane!

It's great to see Varig and Finnair continuing to grow their MD-11 passenger fleets.

The MD-11 is a great aircraft

Bravo VARIG!!! This MD-11 continuity makes perfect sense for an airline that flew the DC-10 for so long and with such care. Since AA, AZ and LX are just about done with the MD-11, and so are DL, RG is fast becoming my sole remaining chance to sample this elegant looking plane before it's committed to its not so glamorous future as a freighter.
A word of warning...when RG are done with them, see how many will cheat the scrapman and join AR instead...they would look great too!

AZ has not really given up on the MD-11. They have sold 5 to LH for Cargo Services and the other three they owned they have converted to full freighters to replace the 747 Cargo.

LVZXV.....5 MD-11s were hull losses, not 8. 200 MD-11s were indeed built, of which 195 are still in existence. I believe FedEx has the largest MD-11 fleet, even tho they're all freighters, while Varig has the biggest fleet in terms of passenger configuration. Regards.

McDonnell Douglas did go back and fix some of the 'shortcomings' of the MD11. It's called the MD-11ER. However, by the time the 'ER' came out, the merger with Boeing was in the works, and only five were built. The MD-11ER had a range of 7100nm, well within the original performance specifications of the MD-11.

Since Boeing has closed down the MD-11 line, there's not going to be any more orders for it, period.
