Power Blackout Disrupts Air Traffic At LAX
Flghts Being Held

POSTED: 10:31 am PDT April 12, 2004
UPDATED: 10:40 am PDT April 12, 2004

LOS ANGELES -- A total power outage in the Los Angeles International Airport tower disrupted air travel Monday, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

All radar, radios and telephones -- essentially everything that controllers use to communicate with aircraft and other control facilities -- was hit by the blackout at 9:40 a.m, FAA spokesman Donn Walker said. Even the lights went out.

Los Angeles-bound aircraft were being held on the ground at their departure points and flights out of Los Angeles International were being held at the airport, Walker said.

Technicians were working on the problem.

What about those in the LA sky right now? I bet maybe many flights there.
Just think about LAX now, so many planes, should be a great sight!

well, since there is no power I guess we won;t be getting any updates from our LAX A.netters... who is taking the transpacific flight diversions? SFO?

Must have been a short outage. The FAA currently lists LAX operating with only delays on SFO flights.

There are several airports in the area which can take the diversions.

Long Beach
Ontario
John Wayne (a stretch to take off again for a heavy?)
San Diego
Oakland
San Francisco
Las Vegas
...

Not to mention a bunch of airbases.

Yep..there's never a 'total' blackout, there's back-up system after back-up systems for communications! They're never out of touch with the aircraft.
