My dad emailed me this morning with a question: he wants to know, on an average weekday, roughly how many commercial flights operate within US airspace? He's including everything from commuters to international flights, passenger and cargo. Any thoughts?

I don't have the answer, but I know a web page that will give you a good idea of what the amount could be!

http://www.flightview.com

If you go to "more choices", and click on "airport traffic" and then "view all traffic" you will see all the airborne commercial flights over North America. It also tells you the number at the bottom of the map.

Hope this helps!

During the middle of the day, there are a few thousand airborne at any one time. I would say that the number has to get well over 10,000 per day. That may be conservative, but I'm not doing the math at the moment.

IB has about 1000 flights per day so I think 10000 per day in the US might be a little on the conservative side. Lets see if someone can actually give a more accurate figure.

There are roughly 32,000 flights scheduled, and of those about 28,000 actually operate per day in the US.

The most recent data indicates 10,463,326 scheduled flights were performed last year.
