The Observaction Deck at FRA Apt Terminal 1 will be closed by 31aug04
due new construction of addictional LH lounges & facilities at the B-pier and C-pier (already closed for many years).

What I have heard it will not be reopend again. Maybe the deck in Terminal 2
will be reopend but not sure.

Sad end of a great deck.

Cheers

I don't think there will be no alternative on offer as soon as the deck closes.

The visitors deck on T1 was one of Germany's most popular and most frequented sights (no kidding, I have read this somewhere) and also a great publicity tool and limited revenue source for Fraport.

Closing?
Wow, thats bad news! It was one of the world's best viewing areas and I have great memories from there. First time I went there was in 1988 and it was a real eye opener, man that's really bad news!
I did'nt know the T2 deck was closed, I guess thats why there are'nt many pics from that location.
So there wont be any more viewing areas in FRA Main?

I dont know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone

I don't get it, why close the viewing area? It's not like there's a legitimate security concern to justify it...

I really hope, once again, I REALLY hope that FRA will not go the same way as LHR.

That would be a real shame...

It's the best viewing deck I know, and I will do everything to get there for the very last time before it closes.

Well sadly thats the way things are these days, I live in Melbourne and didn't even know our viewing deck has been closed for months until someone mentioned it on a.net, and said it was closed indefinitely for security reasons.

But to see FRA's deck close will be very sad, I have great memories running around on it as a 7 year old...  Sad

I read this part, but don't understand it. Are these being built where the observation area currently is?

Otherwise i dont know why there's a need to close it. Fritzi, no need to be so blunt.

This came up on another board a month or so ago and the concensus was that the T2 deck will be reopened during the closure of the T1 facility which will reopen once work has been completed, although AA were a bit concerned as they use T2.

Actually, the observation deck is built around (and partially on top of) one of Lufthansa's lounges (I think it's a Senator Lounge, but I'm not sure), so the building and/or expansion there will - obviously - at least change the observation deck.

I certainly hope that this will only be a temporary measure - I'll be moving to Frankfurt next month, and I'd be annoyed if I only had June to August to actually visit the deck...

Seeing the fact that FRA is, like other airports, desperately trying to get more people to adopt a positive attitude towards it (and towards its planned expansion), I really see this as a very bad move: they'll only manage to anger those that, so far, have a positive attitude towards the airport...

Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is a temporary measure...

Frank

ManchesterMAN,

sorry to correct you but AA operates out of Terminal 1 in FRA.

MXP

To take photos there will not be many places left at FRA.
Actually you still can take photos at the Rwy 18 (take off shots) and landing if rwy 07 is in operacion.
With 25 rwy in operacion you can shoot in the morning landing shots next to the Berlin Memorial (C-47 & C-54) but that´s about it.

Cheers

To be honest, I am not a big fan of FRA's observation deck on Terminal 1.

I prefer the approach spot at the A(utobahn) 5:

and the spot on runway 18:

because there is more action.

However the situation will become worse when you have no car there, it is almost impossible to reach the spot on runway 18 without a car, you have to walk at least for one hour (oneway). I can also not imagine to spend a whole day on the Autobahn spot only, you can reach it without a car in 25 minutes but it is not possible to buy drinks and food there and there are no toilettes.

It would be no problem for me when they close the T1 terrace but reopen the T2 terrace again, there is a large varity of different carriers instead of only LH and sometimes a TG or a SK plane in between on T1.

Patrick

By the way: Rumor has it that LH is building a new terminal at FRA, exclusive for First Class passengers and frequent flyers with Senator status. Do they really build a completly new terminal or do they only expand their current lounge facilities (on the current observation deck on T1)?

It's no rumour. This new terminal for F class pax will be build between T1 and the LH office buildings. Right now there is a parking lot for LH crews.
What I heard is that they will bring the pax by car to the gates (not 100 % sure about this info).

Correction: You can reach the spotter point at A5 quite easily by train (S-Bahn) plus a few minutes walking!! Of course by car is much more comfortable since you have quite some parking space there across the bridge at the US facilities!

What's the best way to reach the RWY18 spot without having to walk for more then an hour?

I have been there once and enjoyed it, but for reg spotters, the terrace is much better...

Frederic,

Maybe taking a cab is not too expensive - after all, it is only a few kilometers and maybe a ten minute drive from T1.

FraT, thanks for the information!

Andreas, you can go to the A5 spot by S-Bahn? I didn't know that, until now I always walked the whole way from T2 but it was no problem, you are there in 25-30 minutes.

Frederic, it is quite difficult to reach the rwy 18 spot without a car, as far as I know is there no bus connection between the terminals and the spot, maybe some FRA insiders can enlighten us.

AS said above, the S-Bahn station is Zeppelinheim. I think there is also a bus from the airport. Check out RMV.de for local transport connex.
It really makes things easier at FRA airport when you have a car as both locations at the runways are brilliant to reach by car with parking space right there.

Call a cab by cell-phone (hope you have one) or bug one of your fellow spotters, who are at the site.  Smile

Note to moderators: Although this sounds like a personal message, the content of my post can also be used by any other spotters, who want to visit this particular place without a car of their own.
