Wednesday April 14, 2004 - Page B4

Air Canada's passenger traffic surged 6.6 per cent in March on stronger ticket sales for domestic flights, the company said yesterday as it reported a fourth consecutive monthly improvement in traffic. The carrier increased its capacity by only 3.8 per cent in March, pushing its load factor -- the percentage of seats filled -- to 76.3 per cent from 74.3 per cent. For the first three months of the year, Air Canada reported a 5-per-cent increase in traffic and a 3.7-per-cent addition to capacity, resulting in its load factor rising to 73.7 per cent from 72.8 per cent.
Of course...this doesn't mean much if yields haven't changed much. But, even if many think AC has already kicked the proverbial bucket, this has to be just a tiny bit of positive news.

AC Right now will take anything positive they can get. Saldy this is the best news they have had in a while. Does anyone think they have hit rock bottom? How much worse can it get for them before they stop flying?

i'm from regina. Heard of it?

Realistically, higher loads probably means higher losses, given AC's notoriously inefficient workforce.

AC needs to shrink itself to a smaller profitable core.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

You're right that it doesn't matter one iota if they are still bleeding cash - that is the only metric that matters.

Put the increase into perspective and you start to see how bad things are for AC. In the AC propaganda they say that "traffic surged 6.6 per cent in March (considering that SARS was in full bloom during Mar 2003 one would certainly expect some sort of an improvement a year later!) but they conveniently don't mention that March 2003 traffic was 12.3% down from March 2002. In fact, Mar 2004 domestic is 59-million RPMs LESS than Mar 2001! Furthermore, the year-to-date for 2002 vs 2004 also show the marked drop off of AC domestic traffic in just two years: 2002 YTD 2,952-mill RPMs vs 2004 YTD 2,596-mill RPMs -- some 350-million fewer domestic RPMs in YTD 2004.

The only "tiny bit of positive news" for AC employees is that it hasn't yet been liquidated.
