For my birthday, my parents allowed me to take a "joy flight" somewhere. There are just a couple of rules and choices.

1) Leaving ABE, PHL or EWR on 29MAY and returning 31MAY or 22MAY to 23MAY.

2) I would like to get on a widebody, as the only one I have been on is a UA DC-10. An LCC is also good (I have never been on one).

3) It can be anywhere within the US and within Eastern or Central time zones.

4) I really don't have any restrictions on airlines, except no AirTran please.

5) Under or around $550.

6) I'm looking to purchase a one-way ticket on two different airlines, if the one way fee isn't outrageous.

I have looked at Song from EWR, Southeast from ABE, Midwest to MKE, American to Dallas but I don't know which to choose. Also, how is getting from PA to EWR and JFK? Is it really that much of a hassle?

Thanks a lot for your input! I know these threads get annoying, but I needed some help.

AAndrew

Maybe UA to IAD and get on a 772 or 744 to ORD (not sure which one is currently running 772 or 744)?  Big thumbs up

Either way you go, have fun, and don't forget to write a trip report!

Try a Southwest out of PHL (for once) being ti soo cheap u can do ALOT of one wyas out fo PHL on the entire day, or perhaps do a Southwest around the country!!! maybe PHL-MCO-TPA-MSY-MDW-PHL in a day(something like that) But that would be a perfect choice for a LCC Flight.

For widebody most likely UAL out of EWR probably(I mean IAD) would be the best.

Thanks for the tip off. I just checked it out, though, and is $491.20 per person O/W.

Suprisingly, CO doesn't run widebodies down to IAH. The largest is a 757.

Thanks for the help so far everyone,

Hey Andrew,
Sounds like an awesome gift. I just played with some flights on CO for the dates, May 29-31 with an itinerary of EWR-IAH-ORD-EWR. For those dates on the EWR-IAH flights you can have your choice of a 777, 762, or 764 in the widebodies and any of the 73's except for the 500 series as well as a 753. The fare was about $420 depending on which flights you take. I was just playing around, but there are widebodies flying the EWR-IAH flights. Also I don't know where in PA you are but ABE is about an hour and twenty minutes or so from EWR. Not a bad ride. Anyway Happy Birthday and enjoy your trip. If you have any questions feel free to email me.

Dave

CO's 762s might be a good choice because they are the only ones with a modern-style 777 interior. AA and UA's 762s are very old and worn out inside.

Well I have almost made a decision. Unfortunately, the UA and CO flights are to expensive (especially for the CO widebodies).

I'm seriously looking at Delta Song from EWR - FLL and USA3000 from FLL - PHL. This will add two new airports (EWR and FLL) and one new plane (A320). But mainline Delta has a PHL - ATL - MIA flight, with the last leg being a 763. Which experience is better, the Song or the widebody?

Thanks again,
AAndrew

AA757, go for a lot of connections too, it makes it fun. Also, if you try to find fairly crowded flights that may be overbooked then you can volunteer to take the next flight and make some money out of it lol.

Hey Andrew: In regards to your question concerning Delta widebodies vs Song, I would definatley go with Song. As a frequent Delta flier, I usually fly PHL to MCO and I have gone through ATL, CVG, and JFK. From ATL it is almost a guaranteed 763 or 764 and from CVG its likely to be a 757 or an MD88. From JFK however, I get a Song 757 and the service is so much better. The flight attendants are a lot younger and nicer, you can get food, and the PTV's are awesome (the IFE is not activated in the 764 between ATL and Florida destinations).

If I were you, I would get a Song flight one way and the mainline DL flights the other way, it would be a good balance.

I forgot to mention that to get on the song flight, you will board a Dornier 328Jet to get you from PHL to JFK...definately a fun little airplane, especially if you get in row A.

Nycfuturepilot,
Unfortunately, the flights I'm looking at are non-stop. Darn!

NW747-400,
Thanks, I'll take your word for it.
About the 328 flight, delta.com isn't letting me connect in JFK, and I am planning on flying Song from Liberty.

Will it be really difficult to leave from EWR and arrive in PHL, if you use a car?

Thanks,
AAndrew

I think You can get a widebody on AA from EWR. Its not a bad choice even If you dont not get a widebody if you never been to MIA. If you have been to MIA then I really dont know. I would go with the UA 747 777 thing. But MIA is a great place to see many different carriers and everything. Why dont you get DL MIA VIA ATL! 767 to MIA then you can see all of MIA. Then get AA back to your destination so you can see terminals A-E. Do whatever you want to do is my main advice to you and have fun.

You have to adjust the times on Delta.com to get the Song flight through JFK...the Do328 flight departs at 1530, and I believe you can also get a Do328 to BOS and jump to a Song flight in BOS. Also, I believe the only Song flights you can connect with are to MCO.

WindowSeat found a great itinerary, I have been trying to get that 772 flight to/from MCO for a long time!!

Good Luck!

I've been trying to catch that elusive 772 on ATL-MCO too. Unfortunately, the connections out of PHL are cheapest for that flight, but that does not help me. From LGA, they are at least $100 more. Now, flying out of HPN would have been the best for me, but who wants to spend $800+ to go to MCO...

cheers

If you're going to buy two one-ways, you'll definitely want to fly LCCs or else you'll really pay for it (literally!).

I'd do ATA from EWR or PHL to MDW, hang around Chicago, maybe jump up to MKE on Chicago Express (ATA Connection) and take Midwest back home. Or, you could do ATA to MDW and take Southwest back home (or vice-versa).

ATA doesn't fly wide-bodies to MDW, but we do have a fleet of brand new Boeings; the ride out of and (especially) into MDW is quite a thriller.

Check out ATA.com and play with the dates to get something cheap. If you'd like any help, just let us know...

AirTran737,
Sounds great, but we are already going to MCO in the summer, and I want to add some new airports.

WindowSeat,
That also sounds great and will look at it, but I have been wanting to fly U5 (USA3000) for a while now. Does DL have buy on board on that flight.

ND,
That was me, but I was incorrect.

Jjbiv,
Interesting story. Since the song flight I will most likely take leaves from EWR on the way down, I figured I would look into ATA. $600 something MIA - MDW - EWR for one way, two passengers! DL was only $84 per person.

Thanks for your help so far guys,
AAndrew

I defiantly take offense to the comment of "have flamesuit ready" Unless you work here, you have no idea the struggle that this company has been through. The crash of 592 is something that every person in this company is extremely well aware of, and something that we still use as an example of for all of our new hire employees. We know who we are, and we know who we were, Valujet is dead, it died in December of 2003 when the last DC-9 when off the line, but more importantly it had started to die when Lewis Jordan left, and Joe Leonard came in. We worked damn hard to shed our old image and to get to where we are today. AirTran is a great airline, we were just voted LCC of the year by Entrepreneur Magazine, and have won numerous other awards. Come take a hop on one of our shiny 717's sometime, hell I'll give you a buddy pass out of my pocket so that you can see what the Tran is all about. We have low costs, new airplanes, good routes, and friendly crew members. We are not the ghetto airline that most ignorant people perceive us to be. We are a player in the game, just ask the boys at Delta. People know that our airline is good, it shows every month when our ASM goes up, our CASM goes down and our load factor rises. I am proud to be a Crew Member at AirTran, I love that I work for a company that is committed equally to safety, great service, and employee happiness. Come fly with us, and leave your damn flamesuit at home. Sorry to go off, but you hit a nerve.

25 Aa757first : AirTran737, That comment had nothing to do with AirTran. That was about someone flaming me (like that). That's why I donned a "flamesuit." AAndrew
26 Trekster : ur 717's look neat. Saw 3 at LAS when waiting for my flight to PHL wAS MY FIRST LOOK AT A 717 AS WELL
27 AirTran737 : I understand what youre saying, but you have to understand that what you say can be taken in many different ways.
28 Sushka : Cool present. I would use the money to fly on a Delta 767-200. I have been trying to go on one for the longest time. Or you could start flying lessons
29 NW747-400 : Sushka...excellent point. I would take the $550 and invest in some C172 time instead of taking a round-trip flight for the heck of it. But either way,
