EL AL At DTW

I just saw 2 El Al aircraft (a 777 and a 747-400) on final to DTW within 10 minutes of each other. Checked flight arrivals to make sure I wasn't crazy, as I've never seen El Al at DTW. Sure enough, both were coming in from Tel Aviv, via JFK. Is this a new service ? It was nice to see something other than a red tail coming in to Metro.

Why are they at DTW? I know Detroit has a pretty large Jewish population, but are these for charters or were these diversions?

Where did they park? At World Gateway or the old Berry Terminal?

Someone get out there and get some pictures, I hear it is supposed to be beautiful up there today

I was just on my way home and saw the 744 go over. Thought I was seeing things. A couple of the local guys are supposed to go out to DTW to try and do some shooting. Maybe they will have some info.

I flew an El Al charter out of DTW in 1998, going to TLV via JFK. We flew out of the Berry terminal. El Al flew in their own security the day before to secure the terminal and pretty much shut the place down for a day until the flight was gone.

That flight was in the end of June I believe, being this early is kind of odd.

Well I wish I had time to go down to DTW today, but I'll try to catch it as it flies overhead since all the other International flights do later in the day.

Where did you get the charter schedule? Any planned for the 23,24,25? I'll be driving by the airport those days and I'd have a few minutes to stop for a picture or two.

I just flew into JFK this AM from TLV on the 744 (flt 001) that you guys saw at DTW. When we were pulling into the gate, I noticed that the 772 next to us (flt 003) which arrived 1/2 hour before we did, had a special title on it: "Michigan Mission to Israel" or something like that.

I asked the LY station manager at JFK and she said the 772 was chartered from DTW direct to TLV and that it took off in the AM empty (except for the crew and food) from JFK to pick up pax in DTW.

BTW, LY has been flying 5x into NYC per day for the past week, increased capacity due to the end of the Passover holdiay. Also, an FA told me this AM that they are planning 7x per day into NYC this summer AND that the new 763 is going to be used TLV-NYC - which surprised me since I thought they'd be using it for TLV-YYZ-LAX.

Shlomoz

As far as I know, the station manager was feeding ur B.S. cuz the 763 is unprofitable for the TLV-JFK/EWR routes..If they can fill up 772's and 744's 3 times a day why would they want to fly a smaller capicty plane that was leased initially for high density european routes and for the TLV-YYZ-LAX route...think about it  Nuts

Alon:

The station mgr didn't say the bit about the 763 - the FA did - and its possible the FA didn't know what he was talking about (wouldn't be the first time). If they are using the 763 on YYZ/LAX - when are we going to start seeing it?

FYI - I have on occassion seen 762's in JFK and EWR. I think even this past winter there was a 762 for a couple of weeks into EWR.

BTW - what's your opinion on the FF changes happening 1/7? The new upgrade policy - where class comes before tier - really stinks, IMHO. So does the move from M/S to Y on the 24hr guarnateed res. for PL's.

* 'bout the 762's coming into EWR/JFK-yea they do that during the winter season when there is need to replace high density routes to Europe with the 772's and the 744's...
*The 763 is currently running flights to europe (Amsterdam,Bucharest,Athens,Paris,London-Heathrow)..and the list goes on..most probably we'll start seeing the 763 on this route after the summer season...

'Bout the FF changes-have no opinion about them as Im not so interested LOL :-P

Yep.

I checked with the pilot who flew the 772 today from jfk to dtw.

they flew empty, another crew will be flying the plane to isarel later on.

they do this every year for some convention or group, he wasn't sure.

cockpit? it's that little room in the front of the plane where the pilots seat.. but that's not important now

I actually was at a cemetery (Ford Rd near Telegraph.....no, not my permanent home) at around 11 - 11:15 am this morning when the 772 came in on final for 21L. It was very, very hazy this morning, but it sure looked like an EL AL aircraft to me...thanks everyone for all the info.
