Pix Of Lufthansa 340 Landing In SXM - Why?

There is an article in German news magazine "Der SPiegel" this week which shows a Lufthansa A340 landing at SXM (it's the famous "people in bathing trunks watching a plane passing over their heads"-picture, but excpet that this time it is not an Air France A340, but Lufthansa). Why? SXM was never a part of LH's scheduled network. Do they lease out planes to cruise ship companies?

And, before you ask, yes, I am sure it is SXM. It looks SXM and it says so in the little footnote.

Can you see registration from the picture??? If so, I can most probably figure it out! Also date would be very helpful, but I guess impossible to get!?

It could have been an altered photo for the purpose of the German article?

Ah. Thanx Starflyer.

I don't think it looks fake. If you see the sun on the aircraft it's similar as where the sun hits the people..

It doesnt look fake in the magazine! And I doubt they would put the all the effort in to change the livery.
My guess would be this is an A340-200 DAIBF "Lübeck" (from looking at the picture closely).

Hi all,

shortly after LH changed from DC10 to A340 in early 90's they used this "new" aircraft for the regulary service to SXM. As I can remember, this series flow for one or two years and than they changed to Condor (B767).

So it is not a fake ! I think, LH DC10's served this airport for some years...

bye

... This is probably true, and by the look of those trunks the guys are wearing it's at least 10 years ago!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy DAIBF was delivered to LH November 1993! Last DC-10's flew out from LH 1994!

It also appears to be a -200, which makes it even more likely that it is an original picture taken in the early 90's of one of the Lufthansa's first few A340's.

I was searching for more information on this, but couldn't find it. I do know Lufthansa indeed operated flights to St. Maarten in the early '90's. They operated a three times a week scheduled service from Frankfurt to St. Maarten via Antigua (FRA-ANU-SXM-ANU-FRA). The flight was operated with a DC-10-30. I didn't know this flight was replaced by a A340 later. I thaught Lufthansa stopped flying to St. Maarten before they starting using the A340. This service didn't last long.

The photo in this thread/post looks fake to me. Someone mentioned the reflection of the sun on the aircraft's tail, but this also looks fake when comparing that "sun reflection" to other digitally made 'fantasy' liveries, such as the ones made by our fellow members Mikephotos and S.p.a.s. Maybe they can tell if this photo is fake or not. Bye the way Mikephotos and S.p.a.s., have you done/made more of those wonderful liveries? I would like to know. Please give us your websites.  Wink/being sarcastic

Kind regards,

A388

I am not an expert on fake vs. real photos, but I don't think "Der Spiegel" would have an interest in this particular case to fake the picture. The article is neither about LH nor about SXM, but just about people that buy emission certificates before they fly, so the magazine just needed any picture of any plane at any airport. LH is an obvious choice because this is a German paper, but other than that I don't see why they should want to fake it.
