There are countless posts out there with opinions on which airline should/shouldn't be around tomorrow; but rather than outright elimination of one particular airline why can't there be a case for consolidation? I know the UA/US merger a few years back fell foul of regulatory hurdles, but surely there is now a very strong argument for doing so, not necessary UA/US but other carriers that would create economies of scale, less overlapping of routes, etc. I for one do not advocate the ch7 scenario of any carrier and especially the loss that would bring, but instead of nothing at least you would have a stronger, and hopefully, leaner enterprise. IMHO!
