Virgin USA And Philadelphia

Here is an idea for Sir Richard and others:

With the upcoming demise of US Airways, PHL will have a large airport with plenty of facilities, a great market that's somewhat underserved.
It could use PHL as a gateway to the USA and run a daily flight to/from London.
Philly is located centrally and one could connect well through the airport.

It would be good to have Virgin in Philadelphia – and it could absorb the soon to be (or perhaps not) former employees of US.

What do you think?

Well, first of all, US isn't dead yet - so there's the first planning insecurity, then there's Southwest coming into PHL - not really the airline you want to be going up against when you start out.

As for Virgin USA being used for connecting flights - wouldn't that somehow negate the the reasoning behind an LCC? Then again, I have heard/read of similar ideas for Virgin Blue, though I'm not sure how far those ideas have progressed.

As for the location - I agree with you on that, PHL is a good location for onward connections coming in from Europe.

I think that's a great idea, if in fact US does fold. I'm hoping that doesn't happen, but if it did, then I think Virgin USA could possibly fill the void nicely. I also think that Virgin's unusual marketing could help them considerably against "cattle car" Southwest....

The lack of a US/UK bilateral agreement prohibit that. Virgin Atlantic cannot connect traffic to the US-based LCC. Bush recently was lobbying congress to allow foreign carriers to operate within the US, or allow them to hold more than just a 49% stake, but experts doubt congress would let that happen.

...VS could only do that if the number of passengers carried from PHL to LON has exceeded 600,000 in the last two consecutive years; or if the number of passengers carried by any single airline exceeds 450,000 for two consecutive years after US dies  Laugh out loud

I don't think there is anything that would prevent Virgin USA from having a bank of departures at 2:30 pm, if VS had a 1:00 pm arrival from LHR. By the same token, if it takes 3 hours to turn around the VS plane for a 4:00 departure, Virgin USA can have a bank schedule to arrive around 3:00.

If Virgin USA makes PHL its hub and VS introduces service to LHR, what's to keep WN from scheduling some flights for the purposes of attracting connecting passengers. If you watch "Airline", you know that a lot of WN passengers connect at LAX for Asian flights. Remember the manager that had to track down the passengers from PHX who were connecting for Taipei?

I heard Sir Richard say in an interview on CNBC several years ago that VS and Virgin Express didn't have a coordinated schedule at LHR, because of the different service levels. He believed that passengers flying VS would not want to connect with an no-frills carrier.

Apparently, enough VS regulars voiced support for coordinated schedules that he was going to explore the revenue potential versus the cost of reshuffling the schedules. Whether this came to any fruition, I don't know.

So, it would be interesting to see if the Virgin USA hub gets a VS non-stop to LHR.

Says who? the federal government says it. Sir Richard Branson cannot operate a carrier here in the US to blatenly feed his Virgin Atlantic Airways. In order for him to operate, he will have to independently operate the US-based LCC. Now if John Q. Consumer wants to purchase a ticket from DTW-BOS to catch his VS flight to LHR, then nobody can stop him. But Virgin Atlantic cannot codeshare or operate domestic system to feed the LHR-bound flights. And they have to have a separate reservation system. It's called the lack of an Open Skies agreement. If they could, then every foreign carrier in the world would be flying the JFK-LAX, and every other lucretive route in the country. Like I said in my previous post, some foriegn carriers are lobby President Bush to open up the US domestic market for overseas-based airlines. But experts believe that congress would never agree to something like that.

Point exactly... so long as the domestic carrier is not majority foreign owned, as is planned, there is nothing to prevent Virgin connecting traffic to the US-based LCC (as per the wording of your post to which I responded).
