When I saw the next article on Aires Colombia last month, I didn't take much attention to it.
http://www.portafolio.com.co/port_secc_online/porta_nego_online/2004-03-24/ARTICULO-WEB-NOTA_INTERIOR_PORTA-1563968.html

(Translation of Spanish article)
The Colombian airline, Aires, plans to invest Colombian Pesos$1bil in changing its image. The initial stage involves Colombian Pesos$300mil, which will be spent on changing the color of its aircraft, its stationery and advertising. The company says that, along with this process, Aires will take delivery of three new aircraft this year. The first of these, a Dash-8, will begin operating in April. The other two 50- seaters will arrive later in the year and begin operating on new routes, for which the company has applied to the Colombian aviation authorities.

But when I saw their new website, http://www.aires.aero/
I couldn't believe that they already started to change their livery and also a brand new company image

I think they had picked up good new colors... better then the old ones. It's something fresh in the Colombian sky's. Better then the boring Summa image.
Also like their website advertisement on their engines.
HK-4107 was the first plane with their new image.

Do you like their new image?
And what do you think about this step of Aires?
Do you see them grow and become much bigger then they are today?
At the end they started as a regional carrier in Tolima and Neiva, and now Aires currently offers 100 flights daily to 26 destinations, including Aruba and Curacao.

The new livery of Aires is awesome. I love it. If AV only went back to the Red livery, the skies of Colombia would be among the most colorful in the world. The new livery reminds me of JMC Air. The Greens and Blues are very similar, if not identical. It reminded me of it anyway

Hello Guys,

Your totally right!
Aires will make a better improvement with their new image.
I agree with Copa.... when you think of Colombia.... you think about a beautiful country with special colors (and not a gray Holland in winter for example)
It's sad that the next liverys had left the Colombian skies:

I hope you liked Villavicencio (VVC / SKVV). DC-3 heaven on earth, and how was your BOG-VVC-BOG trip with Aires?

This new corporate image had been advertised quit a lot during last months in Colombia.
I must agree it's a great livery. The color schemes are warm, lively and modern at the same time. The whole change in fleet and ground services will favor the airline and foster its acknowledge in the market.
I flew aires, PEI Matecaña to EOH Enrique Olaya in Medellín. It was a superb and comfortable journey.

Very nice! colourful but sober also.

Wimpycol, I always wondered why many airlines have the word "Colombia" quite prominent in the fuselage. If you notice most airlines have it (except Tampa) next to their name logo. Is this just a coincidence or maybe some kind of legislation requiring this?

I think Tampa also has them. But I had also asked myself this question? Why do all the Colombian airlines put Colombia next to their titles?

and the flag hanging from rearview mirror on ppls cars, and if you go to a house of someone who is Colombian you'll see artifacts in the flag's colors and Viva Colombia! everywhere  Big grin However for aircraft to fly domestically always having the Colombia titles doesn't quite serve a purpose. Having said that, I like it, it makes the planes (to someone who has never been to Colombia) make the aircraft look more exotic and interesting. The flag looks great on aircraft too.

yep agreed colombia has had one of the world's best looking aircraft thought the years. Unfortunately some of those awesome colors are no longer around like the red Avianca, Aerocondor, SAM, the old AeroRepublica c/s based on the flag, and others... The smaller Colombian airlines seem to look more interesting nowadays than the bigger ones, Selva, Inter, West Caribbean, Aerosucre, LAS, Aires in new c/s -very nice by the way.

I know everyone loves the new Tampa but, although rather colorful, I think there is too much white in the back of the plane with too much color on the front and tail, that arqued design looks too "euro" for a latin airline. I wouldnt mind if they redesigned those, keeping the same base colors when they get the 767s.

Really glad to see AIRES in such a good shape. Indeed, their new colors give the airline a more modern look, instead of that antique livery that they had before.

Apparently their point-to-point domestic network has worked for them. Good job !.

Your second guess, legislation, is the answer.

Colombian airlines are required to have the flag and the country name spelled out on the fuselage. I read here, somewhere, that Venezuela also has this requirement for its airlines.

With their new livery it had been gone! They changed also their name into "Tampa Cargo Airlines SA". I think its about the fact that they want to become a major Cargo airliner, not only in Colombia but in the rest of the Americas! That's why they don't use the name Colombia anymore. It's very strange because of the requirement for airlines in Colombia. But maybe it's because they're subsidiary from the Dutch (cargo)airliner Martinair.

yes your right!!! Summa was on of the worst liverys ever!!!in Colombian aviation history and hopefully this livery will be gone soon!

Well Tampa looks too euro... it can be. The design looks for me a bit German to me, they use the colors of the German flag but...Tampa Cargo Airlines SA is a Martinair's subsidiary. Since a couple of years the Dutch airliner totally control this Colombian cargo airliner.
For me; they must use the colors drom the Colombian flag instead of the current ones!

Groeten, cheers, saludos

Cool Livery, I like it.

"when the first international flight for Aires... Did they have project to lease or buy biggest aircraft?", I wonder the same thing. I checked Aires website out and noticed it flies to Panama and Aruba. WCA used to have only props, but as it is growing, it's incorporating jets to the fleet.

Well, personally I think that the old Aires livery is better than this new one, by the way does anybody know if it's true that Aires is now owned by Santo Domingo group? By the way, maybe I do not like their new livery too much, however I agree with you, our great El Dorado Airport is everyday getting more and more colourful just imagine the early morning: CM, DL, CO, AV, MX, AA, Satena, Aires, WCA, Aerorepublica without mention the cargo flights...and in the evening IB, BA, AF (they have added a fifth weekly service to CDG), LA, AR, AC. I can't believe there are still people out there who can't see how important is BOG hub.

SoAmSky, YULtoPEI,

I believe AIRES didn't have any real project on leasing/buying larger equipment for their international service.

Dash-8 does just fine on these short int'l hops. Remember that they serve AUA and PTY from BAQ/CTG and not from interior cities.

Juanr,

Looks like you couldn't manage to get over the psychological trauma of the last time. Poor thing. Nevermind, I won't have a problem in showing that you're once again wrong.

Well, personally I think that the old Aires livery is better than this new one, by the way does anybody know if it's true that Aires is now owned by Santo Domingo group?

To answer your question, as far as I know, the only aviation-related business that Grupo Santo Domingo has/had is/was Avianca. The media, referring to the Avianca process of being sold to an international investor, always say that by doing this, Grupo Santo Domingo will exit the level of commercial aviation.

our great El Dorado Airport

I'll agree with that statement in 2025, when the master plan for upgrading the airport is done. If it were sooo great, there would be no need for this project that covers almost the entire extension of the airport...

El Dorado Airport is everyday getting more and more colourful just imagine the early morning: CM, DL, CO, AV, MX, AA, Satena, Aires, WCA, Aerorepublica without mention the cargo flights...and in the evening IB, BA, AF (they have added a fifth weekly service to CDG), LA, AR, AC

Let me laugh at this one.  Insane . Almost all the airlines you mention there have served BOG for years. Plus, most of them (including new ones like AC) have 90% white liveries... so no color to add there.

they have added a fifth weekly service to CDG

Old news here. Service added more than a year ago.

I can't believe there are still people out there who can't see how important is BOG hub.

No matter what you say, keep counting me in to that group, until someone with real arguments can prove that I'm wrong. Then I'll have no problem in accepting.

Well, I will allow myself just to give you the facts for year 2003:

BOG El Dorado
2003
Intl. Pax: 1.910.321
Nat. Pax: 5.371.343
Total: 7.281.664
Movements:195.728

RIONEGRO
Intl. Pax: 329.727
Nat. Pax: 1.472.981
Total: 1.802.708
Movements: 45.111

MEDELLIN: (EOH)
Intl. Pax: 246
Nat. Pax: 767.986
Total: 768.232
Movements: 82.426

Total MDE: 2.570.940

CALI:
Int. Pax: 321.934
Nat. Pax: 1.607.808
Total: 1.929.842
Movements: 46.280

This is official info provided by Aeronautica Civil Colombiana I am not guessing the numbers. I do not see that EOH+Rionegro has more movements, or pax than BOG, South America, I am not saying here or in any other thread that BOG airport is as big as MIA or LHR or ORD, just that here in Colombia is the largest, busiest, most colourful  Smile and greatest HUB, and it is one of the biggest in Latin America.

Also, at least by November 2003, Valores Bavaria was the owner of 40% of Aires so I was not too lost, they said they were going to sell its participation but no news had been made since then.

Juanr,

The only thing those numbers prove is what I already knew. That BOG is the most active airport in the country, period.

They do not prove, however, that BOG is great HUB for any airline, all though it tries to be AV's main connection center.

If AV tried to make BOG a true hub, they would time all flights correctly in order to allow efficient connections, they would intensify in making the inter-airport transportation more decent (because right now is more than a burden connecting from their terminal), and they would not put point-to-point flights all over the country, and would rather put all passengers to connect at BOG. Plus, they would at least put to Puente Aereo some jetbridges !

So, although BOG keeps being the most active airport in the country (an it is perfectly logical, proportional to its population), I do not see it as teh hub you say it is. Simple as that. Maybe when AV recovers and when we get to 2025 things will be different.
