Better FFP With One Airline Or An Alliance

I am just wondering if it is better to stick with one single airline's frequent program or to be in an Alliance such as Skyteam, or One World. My primary concern is that the single airline will treat you better with more upgrades if you are an elite member than with an alliance which they may not favour as much.
What is everyone's opinion on this?
