I know I am behind the times, but I have just now started watching the British series, "Airport", which airs Fridays on BBC America. The episodes are from 1999-2000. Can anyone tell me if the series is still in production? If not, are there a lot of episodes of the series? It's such an incredible show! I love seeing the episodes that take place onboard all these exotic airlines and being able to see the flight attendants and their different uniforms. Definitely an indepth series.

Yes, new series due out soon. It's been running here in the UK for the best part of 10 years now. It is seen as the pioneer of fly on the wall tv, the original and best!

Yes, and on an alternative channel (ITV) you can catch another programme called 'Airline', focusing on the plight of staff and passengers who fly Easyjet out of Liverpool and Luton. (Think this was created as a result of the success of 'Airport').

Not as good as aforementioned 'Airport' - 'Airline' has lots of shouting and bawling from staff and pax.

Love, "Airport" absolutely hate "Airline" - almost nothing on the ops side of running an airline like easyJet and almost everything on who's going out with who, who fancies who....what has this got to do with an "airline"?  Angry

Demoose, when is the new series out?

Ringway, I think Airline is pretty good. The only thing I don't like about Airport is when they over do the coverage of the Animal refuge centre. It's not that I don't like animals but airport/passenger problems are a little more interesting in my opinion.

The new series should be on tv in the UK sometime around mid 2004. I haven't heard an exact date though.

I believe it should start within the next few months - usually airs around the half-term break from school!

I think what it is with the difference between 'Airline' and 'Airport' is the fact that we are seeing operations of one airline only in one programme and the operations of many airlines in the other programme.

And this does show in the programme content of 'Airline'. Like DoorsToManual says. It does tend to digress towards life in the outside world of the staff involved, rather than from an airport ops point of view.

Mind you, I still watch it nevertheless.

:D

I love "Airport". I think it is an excellent show in which we get to see many different airlines, their crew, their passengers and what goes on behind-the-scenes of the airlines' operations. As I mentioned in my initial post, my favorite part is when we get to see the interiors of a variety of airlines and what the flight crews look like. One of my favorite episodes is the one that followed an Icelandair F/A on one of his routes. Absolutely awesome!

"Airline", in which we follow the daily operations of Southwest Airlines(in the U.S. version), has its place also. It is not nearly as exotic, but I think it is more exciting in regards to all of the passenger action we get to see. It may be a little "soapy" at times(like the edition about the Customer Service Manager who is an ex-model and had a passenger fall-in-love with her), but it is fun and silly.

I love them both, but I have to say I look more forward to "Airport", as I see Southwest Airlines all the time and it is not that unusual for me.

Mike77 - I agree.

Airport is fantastic - I remember well the episode which featured the Icelandair flight.

If I remember rightly, I'm sure the BBC also aired a programme called Airport Miami sometime last year. (Not sure if that's the correct airport involved but it was the Airport format, and if I'm not mistaken, John Nettles narrated that episode too). I fear it was a one-off because I haven't seen anything of it since.

You're right about Miami Airport. It was an ''Airport'' special.

Mike77, wasn't that Iceland air episode when they had that steward getting ready to welcome the Icelandic President on a flight to Heathrow?

To everyone, I must apologize. In my initial post, I said that "Airport" airs on BBC America. That was my mistake. It airs Fridays on Discovery Wings. I think everyone knows, but I would hate to have confused someone. Sorry. I was watching "Keeping Up Appearances" on the BBC when I was writing the post  Smile

Horus: Yes, that episode did feature the Icelandair F/A preparing for the President's arrival. It then showed the F/A working the flight from London - Reykavik.

BritPilot777: I never got to see the Miami edition. Why was it no good?

I have seen the series 'Airport' via one of Australian commercial networks, and it was just fabulous! If I'm not wrong, the show was produced by BBC. Since then, I have been trying to find it on DVD, but with no success... Does anyone know whether BBC is going to put the series on DVD by any chance?

Best Regards.

I also enjoyed watching "Airport" when I was living briefly in the UK. Is Discovery Wings a separate channel than the Discovery Channel? I receive the Discovery Channel but cannot find Discovery Wings anywhere.

Discovery Wings is available only on digital cable services, or satellite.

Personally, I much prefer Airport to Airline. Not only is LHR much more exciting than the goings on at Southwest airports, but the people they choose to follow around at Heathrow are all very likeable, whereas most of the people on Airline annoy me after a short time.  Smile

I thought the new series was to be in Autumn (Fall)... maybe not then.

Airport is definitely better than Airline. As others have already said, the former is more technical, the latter more personal.

There were a couple of programmes on Hollywood's airport (ie LAX). I think it might have been a trilogy or even a short series. That was interesting too.

All the Airport and Airline programmes have been repeated several times in the UK, on various channels. Some nights I've had the opportunity to watch an hour of Airline followed immediately by an hour of Airport on a different channel!

I think they've pretty much covered all areas of the airport now. Some more tower visits would be good, maybe baggage handling (I want to know where my bags go!), just more airside ops really.

Discovery Wings was running a promo yesterday that said they will be showing two epsisodes of Airport Miami this Friday (4/30) night, and then the "marathon" on Saturday (5/1). Not sure if the marathon will be LHR, MIA or maybe both.

Should be good watching, though!  Big thumbs up

I much prefer Airport to Airline

Mike
