Today a local Dutch radio station broadcasted the news that on the brink of the merger with AF the KLM management placed a firm order with Boeing for 25 B747-400 ER with a value of over $ 3.000.000.000.

After the ANA order this is the second large order for Boeing is a few days time.

Strange !! Very surprising me that they still ordering planes. I was hoping that they will then order some airbusses.
Anyway, some ideas when the first one should be delivered. Will the new planes also be in Combi configuration.
I will fly Saturday from Seoul Incheon to Hamburg. Of course with KLM via Amsterdam. One month later again with KLM back to Korea again.

Save the 747 SP !!

Any further source? This would be an incredible order if it eventuates. Combi must surely figure here though I thought the B773ER would've stood to gain from the merger.

This is great news! Will they be replacing the older 744s or just add to the existing fleet?

Does anyone have a link to an article? Boeing's website isn't mentioning this yet, and a Google news search is fruitless...

I could not find anything on this (not Teletekst, not KLM) Is there any confirmation on this order?
If it is true it would be a replacement for the existing 747's I doubt they will double their 747 fleet.

Seems a little strange this one. Why would they require so many planes of that capacity, when they have just removed their 743, replacing with 772. Also, what do they need the extra range for? Find this very hard to believe.

Great news for Boeing and KLM... It seems that KL has been very satisfied for the performance of their current B747-400ERFs if they will order such a big number for passenger use too. Like PANAM_DC10 said earlier, I believe too that those will be combi versions...

Any other sources and number of firm orders and options? I guess most of those 25 aircrafts must be options...

Best Regards,
FinnWings

I don't buy this (yet), above all the price they mentioned is 125 million bucks a piece. I don't think that's anywhere near the break even...

Could it be someone made a mistake because KLM is ordering the 7e7 instead? 125 mil per copy is the list price for that aircraft.....

Yeah, sure, KL is ordering 25 B747-400ER... especially when they are in the processof a merger. That would mean that the AF board would have needed to approve that one as well. So its your guess ifits true or not.

This is highly unlikely, or maybe KLM could get a better deal than AF  Smile

However, there are no credible source concerning the "news" yet. It is probably just a joke.

yup u cant buy 25 B 744ERs for $ 3 billion...thats too low of a price tag for the B 744 series (ER-ERF-Combi).

If its 25 Boeing something for $ 3 billion then 100% its the Boeing 7E7...though I doubt this is at all true as the A 332 is chosen their B 763ER replacement so where would the B 7E7 fit in their fleet and route structure???

Dutchflyer, what radio-station was that? Do they have a website & phone number? Why don't you give them a call and check it out...or mail me the phone number Big grin

Finnwings, dont think in such a case it would be a combi, as the new policy by ordering the ERF's and the tripples & A332's was to split up the cargo from the pax transport a bit more.

Just on a sidenote..... is there any chance, due to taxes or such, that it would be cheaper for KLM to order a/c than for AF? It could in that case be cheaper for the new airline to order new a/c...

The broadcast was on Business News Radio. I never heard the news item again and no other media has said anything about this deal. So I think it is not true after all. Wishful thinking of BNR or just one stupid reporter.

Sorry for posting without checking it first.

I would love to believe that KLM ordered 25 747-400ERs, but I'll wait to see something official by KLM and Boeing before celebrating. It would be awesome, but with KLM soon to merge into Air France I don't see it. Would be nice, though.

cheers, Ralph
