Last year, most travel agents offered a deal for SYDNEY-SINGAPORE-HONG KONG-SINGAPORE-SYDNEY on Qantas and Cathay Pacific. Doesn't seem that they are offering this deal anymore. Can anybody tell me why? The fare was actually cheaper than SYD-HKG-SYD direct.

Well there are regular travel deals that can be advertised heavily for certain periods. In Sydney, I VERY regualrly see a Cathay deal where you go from SYD-HKG-LHR and then get four stopovers in Europe and the LHR-HKG-SYD back.

This is periodic and will probably be ended soon. The deal would have been very cheap as deals like that have more restriction that a normal discount economy ticket and they also (generally on Cathay) do not accure mileage. These deals generally appear when traffic is, or is forecast to be bellow avergage.

Wonder if they will come up with this SYD-SIN-HKG-SIN-SYD again......... IT was available all year in 2003

As a travel agent we were told what it was for when the QF rep was out.

It was designed for two fronts :
* Help improve yields on SYD-SIN for QF and SIN-HKG for CX, which had not improved in relation to other routes over a given time
* Shortage of capacity for the AUST-HKG routes. As the ex SYD fare was similarly offered for other cities as well ie MEL.
