Blue1 Adds Three New Routes!

According to today's Helsingin Sanomat and Blue1's web page, Blue1 will launch three new routes on May 24. The new routes will be flights from Helsinki to Kuopio, Amsterdam and Mariehamn. The flights to Mariehamn will take place only during summer season. Blue1 has been obviously very satisfied with their Oulu route, so they decided to launch also flights to Kuopio. The lowest price for one-way ticket to Kuopio is only 39 €. Finnair's lowest price to Kuopio is at the moment over 100 € one way!
It's funny that Blue1 had to end its domestic flights due to heavy losses in the end of 1990's. Hopefully they will make better at this time. My opinion is, that they have to have some extra capacity with their planes because they are able to increase their network without acquiring any new aircrafts.

Good luck Blue1!

Keep in mind that Blue1 is 100% owned by SAS which have an interest in harming Finnairs domestic network. So this attempt should be a more serious one.

On a related note, SAS EuroBonus members are able to collect miles on services operated by Blue1. Unfortunately no other Star Alliance programme lets you collect miles at this stage. Hopefully this will change soon enough, making Blue1 an even more serious competitor to Finnair.

717fan, where did you hear about this? Blue1 is still selling tickets to Geneva at least by August.

These are great news indeed... Nice to get some competition and those inaugural fares are very low indeed, but Blue1 has already told that prices will increase in the future. How much, well we have to wait and see. Most likely passengers using the trains on HEL-KUO route will decrease again as a result of lower airfares.

I'm surprised that they are adding new flights as their utilization rate of current Avro and Saab 2000 fleet is extremely high (except on saturdays). So maybe they are adding some new aircrafts or SAS will take over some of their ARN or CPH flights which would give new capacity for Blue1. There has been strong rumors for a long time that Blue1 is looking for some bigger aircrafts and B737-600 has been mentioned as a strongest option. SAS hasn't been very pleased with their 736s so who knows if we will see some 736s flying in Blue1 colors in the future.

HEL-AMS is the most surprising move in my opinion... The route is currently quite well saturated with KLM and Finnair. Most of the traffic to AMS is transfer traffic with both carriers, but with who Blue1 will code-share from AMS onwards? There is much shorter ways get from Helsinki to many other Star Alliance destinations than via AMS.

I have been wondering for a long time that why Blue1 and LH doesn't do any kind of code-share work, even Blue1 has direct flights to Berlin, Hamburg and Dusseldorf? You even can't earn Miles&More points with them...  Insane

FinnWings

My opinion is that Blue1 is acquiring some new planes. SAS is keen to allow its subsidiaries to fly short routes like HEL-CPH or HEL-ARN. So hopefully they are getting some SAS' Boeing 737-600s. It would be great to see them in Blue1 colours!

Great news. I flew Blue last month between Oslo and Helsinki and was very pleased with everything. The planes are very comy and spacious.

Heisan67,

Their planes are very good indeed... clean, new, well kept and 2+3 seating configuration with excellent service. Legroom is superior too so very good experience in overall, I agree! Big grin

What comes to ending the GVA route... I don't believe for that because the route has been very profitable for them. It is just quite long flight (3 hrs 10min) for RJ-85 and in some weather conditions there are some range problems. RJ100 has shorter range so that aircraft we won't see on that route frequently even there could be market potential for larger jet too.

Best Regards,
FinnWings
