The photo below, which was shot at YYT/St.Johns NL, clearly shows an A330. But is this a regular event or was it a one-off from the usual 767?

In the summer of 2003, AC flew YHZ-YYT-LHR with the 333 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The rest of the week it was flown with a 763.

Next flights: YQM-YYZ-YOW v.v. / YQM-CUN v.v. / YQM-YUL-YWG v.v. / YSJ-YYZ-SEA-SFO / SFO-YYZ-YOW-YQM / YQM-YYZ-MUC-TXL /

That's a surprise, I thought the YHZ-YYT-LHR market was too small for the 330, even the 763....

The engine is the heart of an airplane, but the pilot is its soul.

Not at all... It's a very profitable route for AC. I've taken the flight several times, and there are often just as many, if not more, passengers getting on in YYT.

YYT usually has the majority of boardings. Large numbers of full revenue Scandinavian off-shore oil workers travel the route.

AC would love to deploy a 333 for the summer schedule.

Problem is simple--aircraft availability (or lack thereof).

The reason it surprised me is it leaves YYT for LHR after midnight and at one point (maybe 2-3 years ago) when it was mooted that they'd use a 330 it was an issue that the YYT airport fire service was too poorly staffed after that time to allow use of such a large capacity aircraft. Perhaps that has been surmounted/changed.
I have been on that flight on absolutely packed 767-300s ... the market is def. there for the 330, albiet seasonal, especially considering the freight, e.g. huge ocean bouys and oil drilling eqpt., that I have seen being stuffed into the belly at LHR and YYT. Its a nice quick crossing...as little as 4 hours eastbound with a strong winter jetstream push.
