Planning a trip to Italy in March of 2005. One flight option is DL to EWR and Alitalia to FCO. How is their service? Flight is listed as a 777.

A few years back, I flew EWR-MXP on a CO DC-10 and CO / LIRF), Italy">FCO-JFK on an Alitalia 767-300. They were partners, so it was all on one trip. I must say, Alitalia wins hands down. Very good service, very good food.
Now, I know that CO has made a lot of improvements since then, such as the new 767-200, but from my experience, European airlines usually beat US carriers hands down. Free drinks, fantastic service, great food.

As big of an Alitalia fan as I am, Alitalia can be hit or miss. When they're in the mood, they're as great as any European airline (Including VS and BA in terms of service provided).

However, when they're not feeling you or the flight, they can be worse than Iberia and Tower Air.

Personally, I've never had any problems with Alitalia. Have always been treated great, taken to see the cockpit and in fact the crew bunk  Smile

My recco would be to try their new 777's. I'm flying this summer EWR-MXP-FCO and PMO-FCO-EWR on Alitalia and their new 777's.

AZ B777 are very comfortable in economy too!!! and ROM/NYC is probably the best AZ route (the italian carrier has on this route a particular attention;for example you always can find special good italian meals and wines on aboard).... AZ ROM/NYC was the 1st route with 777!
at the same time CO is a very good service ; CO CO / LIRF), Italy">FCO/EWR is operated by a mix of 762/764!
I think that also AA may be a good alternative but from JFK!
Bye

LXSaab,

ciao, come stai? Smile

AZ places the flights to JFK as priority - AZ 610/611 FCO-JFK-FCO is considered to be their priority/blue-ribband service.

The flights to EWR are second in terms of service from Rome comparing with the NRT service.

Also, up there in terms of service offered (comparable lately to 610/611) is 604/605 MXP-JFK-MXP

Ciao Alitalia744 io tutto bene grazie (I' m fine thanks), ma tu sei di origine italiana? (Are you of italian origin?)....
certainly JFK is an historic route by AZ so , as you said, they places these flights as a priority with all attentions (plus then EWR); at the same time FCO is (maybe it's better to say "was") a priority by AZ ; this doesn't mean that MXP/JFK isn't a good....it's a very good route!! but when they started 777 service they decided to put firstly on FCO/JFK instead of MXP/JFK ...... Then they put on MXP/JFK, MXP/NRT,FCO/NRT and all the others....
by the way now the service is quite similar (flights AZ FCO/JFK & EWR and AZ MXP/JFK & EWR are operated all by 777)
Ciao
