Without flying, what's the best and least time-consuming means of getting from Niigata to Hakodate, and from Sapporo to Tokyo? I ask because the trains seem to take forever on these routes. There's bound to be buses from the main train stations and the airport (in Niigata and Hakodate), so I just need to get to the main train stations.

Cheers!

Oh, thinking about a day trip from Kagoshima to Miyazaki. Is there a bus connection from the main train station in Miyazaki to the airport? If so, how frequently does it go? What about prices? Thanks.

As Japan domestic flights are usually hubbed around Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka, you will not be able to fly directly from Niigata to Hakodate. Here are the flight listings for both of these cities:

From the ANA domestic network map:
http://www.ana.co.jp/eng/dms/networkmap/index.html, there are routes from Niigata to:
Sapporo (Shin-Chitose)
Nagoya
Osaka (Itami)
Fukuoka
Okinawa

Hakodate to:
Sapporo (Okadama - this airport is only used for flights within Hokkaido)
Okushiri
Sendai (my old home)
Tokyo-Haneda
Nagoya
Osaka (Kansai)

The JAL domestic network map http://www.jal.co.jp/en/dom_network/ has these routes available:

Niigata to:
Sapporo (Shin-Chitose)
Nagoya
Osaka (Itami)
Hiroshima-nishi.

Hakodate to:
Sapporo (Okadama)
Asahikawa
Memanbetsu
Kushiro
Tokyo (Haneda)
Osaka (Itami)

As you can see, you'd need at least one change of planes to get from Niigata to Hakodate. It gets complicated as you'd need to change airports in Sapporo between flights. If you don't mind backtracking, changing planes in Nagoya (if you fly ANA) might be your best bet if you want to fly (check the schedule first to see if the flight times match - for the smaller Japanese domestic cities, there may only be one or two roundtrips per day).

If you are a foreign tourist, you may be able to use the special 'Visit Japan' fare when you book the Japan domestic flights with your international ticket. Ask your travel agent, ANA, or JAL for details.

As for Sapporo to Tokyo, most of the flights go to Haneda (the domestic airport). JAL and ANA each run only one roundtrip between Sapporo (Shin-Chitose) and Tokyo-Narita, and they are usually run for international connections.

I hope this helps you.

You can find out how to get to Japanese domestic airports by checking out ANA's domestic network map:

http://www.ana.co.jp/eng/dms/networkmap/index.html

Click twice on the city/airport you want, then when you see the airport guide (with maps of the airport), click "Access Information" at the top of the page. This will bring up the list of bus and train options for that airport.

Good luck planning your trip!

Hi folks,

Thanks for your replies - they were useful. I did, however, say 'without flying', as I will need to travel by train (I will have a 3-week pass) and bus (to/from airport from main train station, as necessary).

Cheers,

James.

OK - didn't see the first part of your question. A bit interesting to ask 'without flying' on an aviation message board, but I will outline your choices below:

Basically two options are available to you - Shinkansen (bullet train) or limited express sleeper train. If you have a JR Rail Pass, you will have to pay extra for a berth on a sleeper train (that is not included in the pass). If you take Shinkansen, that service is included in the JR Rail Pass, and you can transfer to a regular limited express train for a day trip.

If you take Shinkansen (bullet train):
1. Take the Joetsu Shinkansen "Toki" or "Max-Toki" from Niigata to Tokyo. This will take you about 2.5 hours.
2. From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen "Hayate" to Hachinohe Station. This will take about 4 hours.
3. Take the Limited Express "Super Hakucho" from Hachinohe Station to Hakodate Station. This will take about 3 hours.

If you want to take a sleeper train, you can do it this way:
1. Take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Ueno Station (station before Tokyo Station). About 2.5 hours.
2. Take the Limited Express sleeper train "Cassiopeia" or "Hokutosei" from Ueno Station to Hakodate Station (these trains end in Sapporo). You will leave around 16:00 in the afternoon and arrive in Hakodate around 4:00-6:00 in the morning, depending on the train.

From Sapporo, you can choose between the sleeper train listed above, or if you choose to travel during the day:
1. Take a Limited Express train from Sapporo to Hakodate.
2. Take the Limited Express train "Super Hakucho" from Hakodate to Hachinohe.
3. Take the Tohoku Shinkansen "Hayate" from Hachinohe to Tokyo.

To go to Narita Airport, you can take the JR Narita Express from Tokyo to Narita Airport. As Narita Airport has two stations: Airport Terminal 2 and Narita Airport (Terminal 1), check with your airline to find out which station you have to use.

If you can read Japanese, you can check out the JR East electronic timetable and find out the schedule of different train lines here. NOTE - this is for JR East services only (Eastern Honshu), but other JR companies may have similar resources for their service areas.

Hope this helps you.

You can also try http://www.hyperdia.com and click on the English version (somewhere 1/3 of the way down on the laft of the page). It will give you various routes and timetables.
