According to local press, another Chinese carrier has launched flights to Kuala Lumpur - flying in from Haikou. The article which interviewed Malaysia Airports also states that a major International airline was in advance negotiations to begin flights to Kuala Lumpur - any ideas who this might be?
I do hope its Air France which will be a welcome addition to the airport.
btw - also just read that Lufthansa has launched a new RTW cargo MD11 service via KUL. This comes soon after relauching 747-400 passenger flights back to the city after a few years break.

Eva Air of Taiwan will increase its frequency to KUL from 4 to 7 weekly flights while Sri Lankan will increase its CMB-SIN-KUL-CMB run from 2 to 4 weekly services (the 5 weekly CMB-KUL-SIN-CMB will remain untouched).
Other MAS update:
- Chennai will be downgraded to B772 (open-skies agreement fell through?)
- Hong Kong flight MH 72/73 will be upgraded to B744.
- Twice weekly flights to Melbourne via Kuching has been suspended.
- MH 148/149 to Melbourne downgraded to B772 between June and September.
- 3 weekly flights to Rome will be upgraded to B744 between June and September.

Haikou? It it more targetted to Chinese tourists coming to Malaysia, or Malaysians holidaying on Hainan Island? I heard the resort city Sanya (host to Miss World pageant 2003) is very popular, but not sure if it's at all popular among Malaysians.

OdiE - SriLankan is doing really well - which came as a surprise to me - as I recently tried to book some flights with them and they are completely full through most of the summer out of KL. I am now booked on MH180/181 to Chennai instead in 2 weeks time and it is indeed a 777 service which is great as its the only aircraft type I have yet to fly with on MAS (!).
I checked KLIA's temporory website and the flight certainly was there on the board - seems to arrive KUL at 4am and departs again about an hour and a half later...
Going back to the unannounced airline - do you think the fact that some big-wig from Air France made an appearance (together with an AF stand) at the last MATTA fair - they may be planning a comeback? (or perhaps it was more to do with Skyteam negotiations for MAS)????

SriLankan Airlines has their best Far East loads on the KUL/SIN routings and in the mid term, KUL services are planned to go to double daily. 1 daily CMB-KUL-SIN-CMB and 1 daily CMB-SIN-KUL-CMB service.

Nothing in the press release suggests AMS-KUL will be cancelled, thus I reckon it will become AMS-KUL-AMS again (unless they find another destination to combine with KUL).

I'm sure KLM will NOT stop flights into KUL as long as they codeshare on the AMS-KUL-Australia route with MAS. Even in the Holland Herald, the MH routes ex KUL to Australia (KL4xxx) are shown.

Also, I would expect major changes in MH's winter 2004/2005 schedules as they phase out First Class in B772.

Interesting - I have just booked to fly on KL807 in November and their on-line booking service continues to list the flight as the same as the one I'm taking in a few weeks time...

Boysteve, officially EK took 42% of the stake in AirLanka and now it increased to around 47% of the shares. SriLankan Airlines changed a lot from AirLanka and is a great airline which can be compared in several things with most of the other major Asian carriers.

I flew on BA last week and the crew were under the impression that BA were about to return to KUL. They reckon that BA pulled out because of high landing fees at the new airport but that the authorities had capitulated. I think it will be on one of their re-configured 772's with no F cabin.
The customer is always right.....unless he is a passenger!

It is interesting to note that KUL was one of BA employees' busiest routes for many years. Friends of mine always complained that it was hard to get ID50s etc on the KUL flight due to demand and it was also a flight that was highly bid for at the time as they could get to Langkawi and other parts of Malaysia more easily from KUL as oppose to SIN. RB211LTN - perhaps the crew are starting to miss KUL as part of their trips!
I remember when the rumour started that they were leaving KUL and lots of cabin crew were astonished and surprised. I flew on one of the last flights (courtesy of BA Malaysia) and the captain came and chatted with us and I remember him saying it was 'madness - look at this flight - we were overbooked and cargo on this sector is strong'.
It would be interesting to see how BA fairs should they return to KUL - they fired (well offered early retirement to) virtually every employee and would have to employ a whole new group of staff there. They would also have to negotiate with travel agents again since the O&D traffic on this heavy route is now well and truly monopolized by MAS and to a certain extent KLM - and being one of those regular passengers - quite frankly - I ditched my BA Exec Club card with glee and am not missing it to say the least - since after years of flying BA - I realised that MAS really does offer a much better product (I even changed my Username to reflect this!)...

Passenger traffic for KUL has risen by 19% so far this year - whilst traffic has increased by 7%. KLIA hopes to achieve a target of 19,000,000 passengers by Dec31 2004. KLIA was built to cope with 25,000,000 passengers a year. I guess in a few years time they will probably reach that number and perhaps the second Satellite for Gates D upwards will be built.
Malaysia Airlines is also planning flights to serve another 3 Chinese cities soon. Any ideas?

MAS already operate substantial amount of charters to China. Those cities getting MH's charter flights that seem to ring a bell now is Xi'an and Kunming. There are a few more but I can't seem to recall the name now. I was never good at remember Chinese cities' names.
FYI, PEN gets once weekly KMG charter flight by China Yunnan (now taken over by China Eastern).
