Really? So fast? JL operated the MD-11 (JA8586) into HNL on 29 and 30 of April as an extra charter (JL8078) due to the golden week. Knowing my luck, I of course missed it, and looks like I'm too late now.
Really sad. Loved to fly them from NRT-SIN-NRT sectors. Too bad.

Truly a sad piece of news. These are such elegant looking jets, but they just did not meet their performance specs. Hopefully,I'll see them in UPS colors.

JL451 to Zurich and JL471 to Delhi are still scheduled M11 service from Narita at least through June according to Japan Airlines webpage. Sometime during the summer both routes go to B777.

It seems a little strange that they repainted JA8582 into the new livery in December if they were planning on retiring her.
JA8582 was painted into the new colors because first of all, the aircraft went through a D check, which I'm assuming would require the aircraft to be painted into the company's current livery.
The other reason why it was painted into the current livery was because once JL and JD merged, all of JD's aircraft were painted to the current JL livery (part of JD too) which is why you see JL A300s in the current JL/JD a.k.a. "Arc of the Sun" livery. It would have been wrong if JL kept the crane livery, especially since the aircraft went through a D check, since JL kind of "took over" JD.
Don't forget, the Arc of the Sun livery was created because of the merger between JL and JD.

I hope I might be able to see some JAL MD11 again this Summer in ZRH ...
According to the JAL website, you will see another MD11 in ZRH...
JL451 M11 06/04 Dep 10:30 TOKYO, JAPAN Tokyo Narita (NRT)
Arr 15:55 ZURICH, SWITZERLAND Zurich (ZRH)
Where does this website got their information? If the JL website is any indication, these beauties will be flying in JL colors for a long time. The above example is only one of many I found.

Last MD11 will leave JAL around Sep-Oct this year. Most MD11 routes will be replaced by B777ER and B767-300s which has been happening for the last 2 years.

Isn't it a bit weird seeing MD11 leaving BEFORE Dc10s?
Well American had the 727 in service longer than they had the MD-11, so the JL DC-10's flying longer than the MD-11 isn't the only time an older plane outlived the newer one...

My JAL or JAIL rahter... DC-10 flight was crap to say the least, a beauty to look at though.
Worn out interior with the overhead bins and plastics turning a very brownish-yellow...YUCK!
I've seen very nice pics of Biman's interior so I guess it's only for those Jailbirds with Jail.
Don't get me wrong, JAL's 777 and 747 were more than superb and it will be a very sad occation for spotters like me when the trijets leave JAL.
Very glad this post was a false alarm! :P
25 Nethkt: I wonder why airlines like JAL is still operating some oldies; Boeing 747-200,747-300, DC-10,MD-11 etc. I can't stand those 4 star airlines using old

27 Pacific: I've never been on a new livery DC-10s. That flight i'm talking about is back in 1998! I do hope they overhauled the cabin some time in the past 6 yea
