I've seen people turned away many times-
I tend to fly UA, so I admit I see it more on UA than others, but thats just due to lack of exposure.
I think some people think they can sqeeze through if they try to board when their seating area/row is not called. I've seen gate attendents apologize and say, "sorry, but I haven't called your seating area for boarding just yet".
Kinda reminds me of that scene in "Meet the Parents" when Ben Stiller tries to board his flight and is told to "step asside"!
And I have no problem with preboarding for F,C or premier status-they paid for it!

Watch the movie with Ben Stiller "Meet the Parents". In the airport scene, during boarding...nobody around but himself and the gate agent. The Gate Agent, soo full of herself and a pure snob, was calling for a certain row. Although it wasn't Ben's row, he took the attempt to go ahead and board simply because there was no one else around. When he gave his boarding pass to the agent, she told him to wait until his row was called and asked him a couple times to step back for other pax to board the plane. Then 30 seconds later she announced final boarding for all pax and he came up and gave his ticket to the agent in frustration. Then the agent goes "Oh hello! Welcome to X airlines, have a good flight". LOL!!!!

As I work for Cathay Pacific at T3, I can honestly say that we also have strict Boarding procedure as follows.
First and Business class are invited to board first then Our Marco polo frequent Flyers along with any Oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members.
Economy passengers are then invited to board by row number, This part is the most difficult,No body ever listens to the annoucment but we always will ask a passenger to return to their seat if its not their row number.
It is also CX policy as with most airlines to Pre-Board Families and any slow walkers first.

I remember when I was enroute to SFO and I was connecting at CVG and they had started boarding the aircraft, beginning with medallion members and the like. This one lady who must have thought she was exempt of all airline rules was trying to board and her seat was at the tail-end of the plane to beat all. The gate agent kept telling her they were not boarding her row yet and she kept on ranting how she would have the girls job and all this crap. People were snickering at her and finally she said..."You haven't head the last of this." and walked off.
You know....I never did see her on that plane, I wonder what became of that.

My experiences with Continental's Elite Access are that at SFO, not only are boarding rules formal and enforced, but credentials are checked. During elite boarding, Platinum first, then Gold, then Silver -- others are turned back. Then general boarding of the the back of the plane. Then the front. The trick is that they always have enough people on hand to control the boarding.
At IAH, it depends on the gate agent and/or the size of the boarding. If it's a light boarding, then "Y'all come!"
At CLE, everyone is usually polite, but few care who boards when. The same would apply at IAD, except they still have random TSA gate checkers who will completely unpack your rollerbag.
At DCA, boarding is stopped if anyone steps out of queue or anyone tries to board at a time other then when they're called. Nevertheless, it's efficient.
At BWI recently, where CO and Air Mobility Command come together, escorted rectangular boxes seem to have boarding preference.

I've seen it numerous times with DL. Non elite status passengers are being asked to step aside and wait for their seat to be called. But I've also seen it several times that passengers that have a seat in a row that hasn't been called yet are being asked to wait for their turn. UA sees to enforce that in IAD too from what I've seen.

Well said, Slider. Boarding by rows (from the rear of the aircraft), and enforcing that policy, is the most efficient manner.
That said, I have to add that I enjoy preferential boarding when I'm in FC. I'm typically on AA, and haven't frequently seen PAX boarding without being called turned away, but have seen it happen on occasion (I did have another passenger push her way in front of my, saying that she was in FC - of course, I let her by - and she didn't even seem embarrassed when I sat down in the seat behind her).
It always amuses me when every one cues up, only to stand and wait at bit longer.

Did Lufthansa introduce the narrow-body boarding rule that window seats are boarded first, then middle seats, then aisle seats? At least I have heard so, and I have seen signs at the gates that said so. It makes sense because this way the aisle passengers don't have to stand up again to let other passengers sit down at the window seat - but if they stick to that rule, families / groups will be separated.
@Mhodgeson Ryanair at BLK and STN do - at BLK everyone crowded round the agent during the 'families' call, and she said wait... made a call for families... no-one came so she boarded 1-30. I was 001!
Doesn't Ryanair usually board 1-65 first? Or is that only at STN?

I've always wondered why F and C class passengers are in such a hurry to board. If they have lounge access, why not enjoy the lounge until everyone else is on board? When I worked at AF, we purposely began boarding with Economy. We left F and C passengers in the lounge and told them we would page boarding when it was time. It was far more orderly, and most premium passengers enjoyed the fact that they could simply walk on board, stow their things and within moments, the aircraft was being pushed back.
Boarding premium passengers first, especially on aircraft with a single forward boarding door (like 767-200 and most 767-300) makes no sense at all. Premium passengers board, get seated, then get pummelled by Economy passengers packing all their gear down the aisles. FA's are trying to serve welcome beverages, while Economy passengers are trying to get down the aisles. There is way too much congestion. It would really be better to board Premium Frequent Flyers traveling in Economy first (for best overhead stowage), then the rest of Economy, then Business, and finally First... allowing them maximum time in the lounge.

As a frequent PC traveler, I want to get on the plane just so I can sit and relax a bit, which is usually easier there then in the boarding area. If there were such a thing as a lounge within easy access of most gates, I would agree with boarding FC last. Unfortunately, at least at IAH, that isn't true. And I haven't ever experienced an airline paging me from the airline club (at least not CO or AA).
As for the economy passengers passing through FC, that's just part of the deal. And as for FAs serving drinks in FC prior to departure, my experience over the past few years is that either they wait until coach is boarded, or they don't bother at all.
