Good article on FLL's tremendous growth and MIA's lack of growth. While AA's growth at FLL is admirable, one has to wonder how they can make an operating profit if they're matching the fares of the low-cost carriers at FLL?

I like FLL, so it's good to see them doing well. I don't think FLL is the next MIA, but I do think that they complement each other in that even if they do, at some point, start catering to some of the same sectors, South Florida is only going to get bigger and both airports are destined to flourish.

Asuflyer05, see http://www.broward.org/airport/avi02100.htm. They are also planning on extending runway 9R/27L. They could use some form of a people mover connecting the terminals, though. It looks like they may be considering such a system to serve not only FLL, but the cruise ship terminals at Port Everglades, too.

Interesting article, but I would add San Jose/Mineta International into that mix of airports also (although the SF/Oakland airport rivalry fits better with the MIA/FLL theme).

They have been trying for years to get a new runway built. The citizens around the airport have put up a pretty good fight. I just don't understand why some people would move near an airport. I would, just like most of us Laugh out loud

. Most people that live there moved there after the airport was there and people need to understand that the world population is expanding rapidly. I wish they would build a new runway, I really want Intl traffic.

The comment by the consultant at the Boyd Group was right on the money - the story for public consumption is that they don't compete with each other. The reality is that they do compete, with MIA seeking low-cost low-fare carriers to drive down airfares, and FLL offering financial incentives to airlines that will start service to certain international destinations.

I love the comment by MIA's spokesperson about them targeting different markets. The reality is that they'll take any traffic they can get, even if it's Joe's Airways from Naples, FL.

And if airlines think the costs at MIA are high now, they haven't seen anything yet as time progresses and the costs of all the capital improvement programs kick in.

It was not that long ago when MIA had between 25 and 30 million pax a year and FLL was around 5 million. Now FLL recorded 5.5 million pax from January 1st to March 30th of this year. That's 22 million pax a year if the next 3 quarters equal the first quarter. The FLL Airport Expansion Program Update (link above in F9Fan's post) says they expect 25 million pax by 2015. I think they need to update their figures because they're going to hit 25 million in a year or two at the most.

Actually I fell in love in FLL back in the early 90's because it was so easy to use compared to MIA, even though I had to pay for parking at FLL. Now PBI is a dream to use compared to FLL, which is still a dream to use compared to MIA.

Ah, a blast from the past and I'll never forget the great first class meals you gents used to send over to the gate controllers for dinner. It then digressed to coach meals with mystery meat balls that we gave the goat balls name to. I have a few pics of those meals somewhere in the archives and I'll post them when I find them.
