Your Nat'l Carrier Vs. Foreign (US) Carrier

In a recent thread we were talking about UA's new flights to Latin America and how they were mainly geared toward Americans heading abroad vs. Mexicans, Costa Ricans, etc. coming to the US and whether the routes can be sustained with little originating foreign traffic.

Which got me to thinking, how do people feel about booking tickets on foreign carriers versus their national carrier/airlines based in their home country?

For example, how likely are Mexicans to forego MX and AM and book a Mexico-US R/T on UA, AA, AS, etc.? Do Brits feel guilty about flying a US carrier to the States as opposed to BA or VS?

This is NOT meant to be a racist thread in any way...mainly more curious about how foreigners feel about America(n airlines).

I'll choose the airline that offers the better service, most comfort, IFe and cheapest $$$.

That said If I fly ttransatlantic I would only choose UA, BA or AA. I find VS to be crap in Y and don't want to make the treck to LGW for US, CO or DL.

Out of the 3 from LGW I'd be more likely to fly US.

I would be pretty loyal to Aer Lingus, but wouldnt feel guilty about using a U.S carrier at all. I would say we in Ireland have three of the better ones at present in US, DL and CO.

My choice would probably be DL, just to get on the 777 that comes here from June-October (763 at other times)

Don't give a damn - it comes down really to who has the cheapest price for any given level of service. BA economy is generally preferable to VS for comfort but on my last few BA long haul flights have found the cabin crew to be stuck up and disinterested and as a company they blatantly don't care about you if you fly Y class. In fact flying to the US I prefer CO as the seats seem larger, vastly prefer Gatwick to Heathrow and OnePass is ludicrously generous compared to BA.

Then again, I would sooner not go to Brasil than fly Varig again. So there are limits.

While there may be some particular peculiarities about United's service to Central America, I think you'll find that most American carriers are very aggressive in pursuing inbound sales. For example, United Airlines' sales force is extremely active in Australia, as are American Airlines' in France. Quite often it is the carrier on foreign soil that tends to be the most aggressive. Lufthansa is will work harder for the U.S. originating sale than it will in its own home country. Likewise, Delta Airlines will work harder for sales in Europe than it does at home. Why? because the home market normally doesn't require as strong a sales effort. At home, the carrier has an existing large presence, coupled with strong frequent flyer demand. In the home markets, the biggest threats are usually the LCC's. I believe this is equally true in both the U.S. as well as Europe.

I don't know if guilty is the word I would use (although perhaps you are right and some Mexicans would feel guilty of flying a foreign carrier rather than a domestic one).

For me (and this is just me), I try to fly AM to the U.S. as much as I can for mainly two reasons. The first one is that I am a SkyMiles flyer so flying with AM gives me miles. Here you would say that then I should give DL consideration equal to the one I give to AM. Well, my second reason is that I find AM to have a better service than DL overall. I have had bad experiences with my luggage when flying DL and I think AM f.a.'s are much kinder and attentive.



Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I'm very loyal to Lan, which in my opinion has one of the best inflight service around.
But I don't mind if I had to fly AA, actually the only time I've been in USA was on AA and I had a very good experience. And even more, since AA and LA has absolute compatibility on Frequent flyer program, even better. I would avoid delta for the same reason.

Lan has better service, so I would choose Lan, but nothing to do with nationalism, Chileans don't care of nationalism when consuming, just price/quality.

In most western countries the answer is simple. Assuming the timetables are the same, and price is similar, most would pick either one of their carriers. For example. QF over UA. BA over AA. AF over DL. It comes down to reputation. US carriers have a poor reputation for service. Although this isn't always true, for longer hauls, unless ppl get a good deal, they know if they get on BA or QF, they're going to get complimentary alcohol, amenities kits, ice creams etc in between movies. And those little touches are nice. Another thing. If the passenger is between say, 18-21, they WILL ALMOST ALWAYS choose the non-us carriers because they're allowed to have a drink. Countries like france or italy, you could probably get away with ordering wine at 16 on their airlines.

There is a perception in many countries, that because the "average" american is so loyal to american brands, they wouldn't try the likes of QF on their own accord, so they wouldn't realise that the service is at a much higher level for the same given class. I am not sure if it is that simple, since BA seem to do pretty well out of NYC, and all of their passengers couldn't possibly just be European with that huge volume of flights... leads me to conclude a certain amount of americans have a preference for BA too. go figure.
oh... some more experienced non-american flyers will stay loyal to american carriers on the grounds of getting upgrades... US carriers tend to be far more generous at this and have more rewarding frequent flyer programs.(easier to get status, standby upgrades etc)

I simply couldn't care less. The service provided by american companies in routes from Colombia to the US is extremely similar to Avianca's. It all depends on fares (which are usually the same thing), schedule convience, and connections (it's nice to choose the airline that will operate your onward leg).

But, If I get to fly Avianca, good. And if I get to fly any other american carrier, good too.

I tend to fly DL on international routes for two reasons. They are usual at the bottom end of the price out of Florida and adding miles to my account is sometimes a consideration when I'm close to a free ticket again. I hardly ever book a flight that has more then 1 connection if I can avoid it.

I've flown to the UK twice, once on BA and once on VS.
I've flown to Australia and New Zealand on QF.
I like flying on foreign carriers, it makes the trip start a little sooner in my opinion. To the carribean and central america, I would prefer to stay on a US carrier. Its really hard to compare most US carriers to foreign carriers because US carriers provide so much domestic service. Domestic service is built around price and convenience, not passenger comfort and level of service. Foreign carriers cant hold a candle to the breadth and scope of the networks of almost all US owned airlines.
