Today QF107 At Ontario?

Ok i was just checkin out flights in and out of LAX on flytecomm and i noticed QANTAS flight 107 SYD-LAX-JFK actually said SYD-ONT and had arrived. Was the flight diverted or something? Any info? can ONT even handle a 744.

Yes. UPS flies/has flown B747 into there all the time, as well as other cargo carriers.

Ontario is often used as an alternate for transpac flights, if nothing but to fulfill legal requirements. However, their proximity usually means that both ONT and LAX are hit with the same kind of weather most of the time.

Ok, im still baffled!!! i just checked flytecomm again just to see what was going on and it says QF107 LAX-JFK arrived? and yet the earlier SYD-ONT arrived instead of LAX? Has flytecomm gone mad with airports in the Los Angeles metropolitan area or what?

Im sure there was no QF at ONT today, but who knows maybe there was. Thanks for the info AAJAX and $1.50, but I'm still confused.

Even though LAX and ONT are not far apart from each other, this can happen on occasion due to the "June gloom" that we experience in CA (even though I know it is only May).

LAX is right on the coastline, so a marine layer often reduces the visibility to levels that don't allow for landing there. In that case, it is not uncommon for flights to be diverted to ONT which is more inland (and the marine layer usually isn't a problem). This happens especially if they are coming from far away and might have fuel issues, and therefore would rather get on the ground.

Also, the marine layer tends to only be a problem at certain times of the day, so what might have happened is that the flight from SYD got diverted to ONT until LAX cleared up, and then might have been able to get to LAX (since passengers from the MEL flight might need to board) and then leave there for JFK. I'd be willing to bet that this is what happened if the data that you are seeing is correct.

I doubt that that could happen. There is a time gap of 2hours 45 minutes between arrival at ONT and departure from LAX. I doubt that they could clean and get a 747 to LAX and then to JFK in such a short period of time. It takes at least 2 hours to turn it once, let alone twice.

Probably just an error. Or maybe the JFK leg subbed for another plane that would normally sit in LAX all day. I'm probably wrong, but it could happen.

I saw that happen about 2 years ago. I was outside and was shocked to see a Qantas taking of from ONT.I am fortunate to see departing aircraft from my front yard.

It must've been an error on the part of flytecomm.

LAX Airport Monitor 2.0 (http://www4.passur.com/lax.html) shows that QF 107 had arrived at LAX. It entered from the southwest around the coastline at Seal Beach at 06:43, made a slight left turn over Rossmoor at 06:44, then made another left turn near the intersections of the 105 and 710 freeways around Lynwood at 06:46 making it's final approach to LAX runway 24L. It touched down at LAX at 06:50:57.
