Can You See Airplanes From Space?

I was wondering after seeing that NASA picture the other day showing the contrails from space. My question, could someone on ISS or Space Shuttle actually see a airplane flying? I know their cameras have a large zoom but is that enough?

I think what we can see an airplane from ISS or Space Shuttle is just a tiny moving dots.

Is there a link to the picture itself? Or was it on TV.

With a telescope on ISS an airplane should be visible, just like on a satellite photo. The weather... the different atmosphere layers between the station and the plane have to be very clear though, I guess.

Thank you for finding that, I was looking and was not having any luck.
Tom, I am not sure if you get the NASA channel on Cable but when the Space Shuttle was flying they would be playing with the camera and zooming in on clouds. That's what got me wondering if they could see larger aircraft.

Man I can barely see the plane if a controller asks me to report the aircraft in sight, when it is below me...kinda blends in.  Nuts

I've heard it on good authority, that contrary to general perception, you cannot see the Great Wall of China from space!

But it is great sitting on the top of the wall and watching all those long haul aircrft flying over, mainly to Europe!
