Did anyone know that Spirit had ordered new planes from Airbus in Toulouse? I just received my Airways issue last nite and that's where I found out. Spirit is planning to replace it's fleet of MD-80 aicraft with A321's and I think A319's also if I remember correctly what I read. Deliveries will start next year and run through the rest of the decade.
Spirit will be the 2nd A321 operator in the United States, first is US Airways.

Hey, I didn't catch that order either until I recieved my Airways mag about a week ago. So, I'm with ya there!

I forget, but I think the A321 order is for >5 a/c. . .anybody have a correct number? The A319 order number is huge though.

I do like seeing Spirit's MD-80 make that loooong takeoff on the FLL route here in Denver. I'll miss those in time.

Spirit are using a mix of leasing and purchasing for their new Airbus planes. They haven't yet signed a deal with Airbus for purchased aircraft - they don't show up in any of Airbus figures.

There is a difference.

Perhaps someone could post a link to the original topics talking about the order?

Spirit's press release says something different - the order is for 35+60 and specifically mentions Airbus and ILFC. A brief extract -

"The value of these agreements, including 60 options, could be as high as $5 billion. "This is a combination of deals with three major global corporations; Airbus, IAE International Aero Engines and ILFC (International Lease Finance Corporation)," explained Schorr."

My prayers have been answered!!! Soon, no more slithering in and out of those matchbox sized MD80 cargo compartments. Ill really miss the protruding sharp edges, half torn tape paneling and my favorite, the stench of the lavatories. With the exception of 836NK, ramping NK is a challenging experience to say the least. I also hope that with the Airbuses, we will no longer have to play the 'numbers game' with respect to weight and balance.

This is a good thing for Spirit airlines. the MD80's are old and need to be replaced and also this means that Sprit is doing well with passenger loads since the A321 is a large aircraft Spirit must know that they can fill up these planes with no problem.

This question has just been answered. Spirit today signed an order with Airbus for 11 A319 and 4 A321, plus options for a further 50 A32x family aircraft. This is in addition to the 24 A319 and A321 that Spirit will lease from ILFC. A total potential fleet of 89 aircraft.

I hope this isn't being repetative but here is a brief excerpt from the official ILFC website:

ILFC LEASES 20 NEW AIRBUS AIRCRAFT
TO SPIRIT AIRLINES

Century City, CA, March 19, 2004 — International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG), announced the lease placement of 20 new Airbus aircraft to SPIRIT AIRLINES.

SPIRIT AIRLINES, Miramar, Florida, committed to lease 18 new A319-100’s and 2 new A321-200’s from ILFC on 15 year leases, all equipped with IAE V2500 engines. Deliveries will commence in April 2005, and will include 8 deliveries in 2005 (including the
2 A321’s,) 6 A319’s in 2006 and 6 A319’s in 2007.

Obviously the info is outdated (as you can tell between the differences in actual aircraft ordered then as compared to now) but it does give a little insight into the deal.

Perhaps it's old news, but it made the business headlines on CNBC a few minutes ago.
