SriLankan Airline's staff strike over pay dispute causing flight delays
Associated Press, Fri May 7, 2004 09:46 EDT . - - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) Hundreds of workers of Sri Lanka - 's state airline went on strike Friday demanding higher pay. Several flights into and out of the capital were delayed.
More than 600 of SriLankan Airline's 4,200 staff stopped work. The Flight Attendants Union said the decision to strike was taken after years of failed efforts to reach a negotiated deal. It said the strike would continue until an agreement was reached.

SriLankan flights to India, Britain, Kuwait and the Maldives were the first to be grounded. Flights arriving in Colombo were delayed. The planes of other airlines were not affected by the strike.

Hundreds of passengers were being bused to hotels until the dispute is resolved, airline officials said. They said emergency meetings were underway to end the strike.

This all seems to be related to the new government there. A marxists government has assumed power and the employess in many private and government institutions are demanding what the marxist promised. I did not think it would affect the airline , at least not soo soon.

SriLankan Airlines' cabin crew back on duty
8th May, 2004

The SriLankan Airlines' Flight Attendants Union (FAU) who declared a token strike yesterday, came to an understanding with the management of the airline, after a very cordial meeting held at the SriLankan Airlines' headquarters in Colombo, this afternoon.

A management team comprising the Chief Executive Officer, Peter Hill; Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, Neeraj Kumar; Head of Corporate Communications, Chandana De Silva; and the Head of Human Resources, Sunil Dissanayake met the representatives of the FAU at a closed-door meeting at 2pm to share and discuss their views amicably.

The FAU called off the token strike minutes before the meeting took place and expressed their willingness to report to duty at 2pm on 8th May so that the disrupted flights could be re-scheduled and operated without further delays.

The management and the FAU scheduled another meeting for week after next, to continue the discussions initiated at today's meeting.
